I just purchased a Leupold 3-9X33 EFR scope and was going to mount it on my Ruger 77/22 rifle. However, the front objective bell of the Leupold is too big and bangs into the folding rear sight of the Ruger. Should I (a) remove the rear sight; (b) buy taller mounts; or, (c) buy a different scope and use the EFR on one of my nicer airguns? Thanks for any advice that you can give me! Smile

I would just take the rear sight of, I mean if it ain't gonna be used just put it up incase you ever go back to ironsites or sell it.

To remove it, do I tap it out of the dovetail right-to-left or left-to-right?

I think either will work but I ain't sure,  I just taped my old one out a marlin from left to right and did the same on a browning.

Thanks, SVT! One more question: if I were to go with a new scope instead, is there a big difference between the Leupold VX-I and VX-II 2-7X28 scopes? Enough to justify the $125.00 difference in price?

I'm not an expert, but YES there is a difference in the glass the VX-II is alot better......The edge to edge clarity and sharpness is very good...

That is an interesting question on the dovetail. If it's like the 10/22 you should be able to drive it out from either direction. Don't use a steel drift, it will leave a mark on your sight base and if you slip will mar the gun. Use a brass drift or a small wooden dowel. Also, supporting the receiver in a gun vise will help a lot
The question is interesting because the Browning High Power used to come with a tapered dovetail on the rear sight. It could only be removed from one direction.
The Leupold you have on the 77/22 is an excellent choice for a rim fire. You have a very nice combination.

The Leupold 3-9X33 EFR is what I have on one of my rim fires and I am pleased with it.

Thanks, all, for your replies. I had tried removing the front sight but it wouldn't budge. So, I went with the Leupold VX-I scope for my 77/22 and put the 3-9x33 EFR on a high-end air rifle that I shoot targets with.

Nothing wrong with that move either. I would be happy with a set up like that on a rim fire and an air gun.

It's a lot easier to swap stuff around if it's all good gear. Sounds like all your stuff is good gear and should make for 2 nice rigs in any combination. Keep us posted.
