i like matte scopes, and matte rings/bases, silver puts off too much of a reflection for me, and you should get the matte if you want to get close to yotes without the chance of them seeing you.

yeah, good point i don't if it would make that big of difference. what was ur point that the rings wouldn't hold a 44 or 50 mm scope. i don't think that it would make that big if difference if its still a one inch tube. not sure, ur the smart one. thanks for all the help. i dunno about the silver issue cause its gonna be a matte one. with a white blanket of snow. i wouldn't think it would make that big of difference. i dunno though.

That's the only silver scope I have.  The rest are matte, and also look good on grey rifles, stainless rifles, etc.  Can't go wrong with Matte.  better resale on your scope too if you want to sell it.

M77 VT,

as a general rule for a 1" tube scope with a 50mm objective lens you need higher rings than for a 30mm tube scope with the same objective.  If you think about it you'll see that the bottom of an objective bell of a 30mm scope will be 2.57mm higher off the barrel than that of a 1" scope (assuming the same objective bell size).

Most ring manufacturers publish the height of their rings which is the distance from the top of the base to the bottom of the scope tube.

Most scope manufacturers also publish the outer diameter of the front bell.  TO calculate the difference in height of the bottom of the scope tube from the bottom of the objective bell do the following:  Subtract tube diameter from the front bell outside diameter and divide the result by two.

For example, Sightron S2 4.5-14x50 scope has a 1" tube (25.4mm) and outside front bell diameter of 57mm.  That means that from the bottom of the main tube to the bottom of the front bell it measures: (57mm-25.4mm)/2=15.8mm (or 0.62")  That means that if you want to use Ruger rings for this setup you'll have to go to High rings.  Ruger provides data on the distance between scope axis and bore axis.  Using that and knowing outside diameter of you barrel where the scope is going to be over it you can easily calculate the height of the rings you need.

Ilya

well thanks for the help. i think i'm gonna get the nikon buckmaster do to the recent budget restriction. thanks for all the help. hey just a question what do u think about a bipod. i'm talking about coyotee hunting. is it worth it. i figure that it might be akward to set up with but the ruger is perty heavy. it might be a little shaky. what'd u think? what else would u think of?

for coyote hunting, with that heavy of a gun, your going to want some kind of a support, most yote hunters use shooting stix, but i like someht9ing attatched to the gun, i use a harris model 25C on my coyote gun, which adjusts from 13-25"(?), and swivels, and i beleave i paid $120 for it, but it can easily be found for less than 100, i just needed one then, and there, so i went to my local sporting goods store, and picked one up. which buckmaster?? the 4.5-14 isnt a bad scope for the money, and it will last you for quite some time, might i suggest the mildot reticle model though.

thats an idea on the mildot. the problem is that none of my shopes carry them in mildot. it takes them forever to order them ( 2-3 weeks) don't ask me why. i could order it from here though. i dunno it'd kinda be a slap in the face cause i know everyone at my local shop. i still don't know on the bipod deal. my dad won't hear of it. lol. is it really a good idea? evryone i talk to say that they'd never own one cause they get in the way of somthing if a yote gets in too close. i dunno though cause i also plan on having a winchester super x2 with 3 inch twos in heavy shot for if their within 35 yards. i'll have the rifle dad would take the x2, thx cory and everyone. for all the hlep in all my posts
