Belted magnums can be tricky. all other are pretty simple to load for in the grand schem of things. each rifle has there way they want to be loaded for and that can be tricky.

I like to load for them all.

Mostly it is short action vs long action thing.

A short action typically will weigh less.  Also when shooting prone you can run a short action bolt without having to move your head.  Some complain with the long actions they cannot do that.

With the 30 cal mags, the short mags typically don't preform as well above 190 to 200 grain bullets.

That is what i was thinking about as far as running the bolt.

I will broaden this out a little bit. I want to get a rem 700 top with SS 5-20
Hunting/ long range target.

Caliber suggestions?

What will you be hunting?

.260, 7mm-08 or .308 are great choices.  The .260 will have the same trajectory as the 300 win mag 190 grain bullets.  .308 will have more energy on target though.

I have a 300 WSM hunting gun.  While it is a great hunting the gun the recoil is substantial so it is not fun at the range.  Of course it only weight 7lbs.  Doing on OCW test was a rough day.  35 rounds, ouch.

You could always brake a magnum, but I don't like that for hunting.  Makes them way to loud IMO.

If you are going to reload, I would suggest the .260. If you are going to run factory ammo, get the .308.
