If you've seen my other post concerning scope recommendations you will note that weight was a consideration.  The reason being as the rifle will also be used in some matches with varying distances.  Possibly as short as 5 yards CQB up to 250 yards.  The only parameter is that you can't change or remove optics.  So I've come up with a compromise I think and would like opinions.  I'm looking at scopes in the 3x9 or 4x12, etc magnifications.  Even at the lowest power they are not really practicle for CQB.  Well Badger and Arms both make tactical rings which you can mount a second optic above.  So the scope as my primary with a small red dot above.  I know it's going to be heavy but now you see why I'm going for  a lighter weight scope.  So any opinions?  The other two options are high see thru rings which I'm not crazy about or just take the scope off and shoot with irons and my glasses.  Any other suggestions?

Brett

You want to mount a red-dot on top of a 4x-12x scope.........as in simultaniously??

Given your stipulations, I would co-witness the irons with a larger tube 1x red-dot or just use the irons. Depends on what your maximum-range targets are and how easy they are to aquire.

A Aimpoint 2MOA Comp 2x is another option.

Or: http://www.riflescopes.com/departments/270/rifle_scopes/leup old_scopes/leupold_mark_4/leupold_mark_4_cq_t.htm

I would definitely avoid using a 3-9 or 4-12 scope or a "two-story" optic system. You don't need that kind of magnification to be effective at 250yards.

In what position(s) will you be shooting in (when shooting out to 250yrds)?  Offhand shooting will lessen any dependance on magnified optics.

i suggest either a acog, aimpoint 2X, or using the larue sytem to mount a jpoint over a scope, im not sure where the larue mounts can be had though.

Thanks for all the opinions guys.  I know the two story idea seems kind of idiotic at first but you really need to read my other post to get the full story here.  The scope will be used also for group size shooting while making various changes in the rifle.  Now I probobly could go with the 1x4 option but the 4x12 just makes it easier.  As far as mounting the red dot above it would only be there during the actual matches.  I figured it the AR guys could mount flashlights, laser, etc why couldn't I mount the second optic as well.  As far as using Irons for the match that is certainly a possibility.  I'm just trying to stay away from wearing my glasses if possible during the longer shots.  100 yards really taxes my vision.  Maybe I should dump the whole scope idea and just get laser eye surgery, lol.  Well, once again thanks for your opinions.

Cory, what is a jpoint?
