I am planning to mount a Bushnell Elite 4200 on a Steyr SBS Mountain (20 in barrel). I would like to try the Talley lightweight aluminum one-piece ring/base setup, but have been advised that I need high rings (regardless of objective bell diameter) in order to provide for bolt handle clearance. Has anyone tried the medium rings with a Steyr? Also, I have never lapped rings-- is it necessary with this setup, and where do I learn how to do it? Thanks for any advice.

Medium height rings should do the trick for you. The only real problems out there with bolt handle clearance are in the CZ 527 & 550. As for lapping your rings, thats something you have decide on yourself. To some people, you should lap every ring out there and others take it on an individual basis. I would at least give it some thought, but I wouldn't lap it unless it needs it.

I have a Steyr SBS in .280 with a Zeiss Diavari 3x12x56. I use the Talley 2 piece steel base and Screw lock QD medium rings. Bolt clearance is not a problem with my set up. Gary Turner @ Talley has always been great about swapping out rings and bases as long as you do not expect him to swap put damaged and obviously used parts. Hope this helps. Are you a Fla fan living the Heart of Dixie?

Thanks for the info, Earl. Actually I am an Auburn fan living in Alabama, and am something of a reptile freak. That SBS setup sounds sweet. Do you handload for that 280? I have always liked the ballistics of that round, but am unwilling to get into handloading-I am already too obsessive about hunting. Thanks again for the reply.
