Right now I am sitting here tweedling my thumbs (yes the brown one too) waiting for my Talley ring /mounts to come in and starting wondering if I should mount my new 4200 myself or take it to a gunsmith.  Since I am just starting to use a scope I don't know very much pertaining to there mounting and use....yet

My Savage had a factory mounted weaver style base, which I have removed in anticipation of getting the Talley's.  CF2 says he uses talley's on several of his rifles with no problems.

So I guess I am asking if they will need to be lapped and aligned or just mounted up?
Again, I have not used a scope until my eyes started going south recently.  I also read where CHris said to always push the mounts toward the tip of the barrell as you snug the hardware.  Is this too remove any lash or creek from oversized mounting holes?

Somebody go over the basics of scope mounting to educate this poor dumb newbie.

thanks

I would assume you are talking about the vertically split Talleys. They do not need to be lapped. When you mount the bases, make sure that the recoil shoulders are facing the muzzle. Then when you mount the rings, make sure the rings are snug against the recoil shoulders. That is what Chris is talking about I believe.

Hardly, but thanks just the same.

Roy is right, the vertical split Talleys need no lapping. I "assumed" Bud was referring to the horizonal split Talleys.

Sorry guys, I was actully refering to the Talley light weight ring mounts thjat CF2 swears by. Split front to back but all one piece (base & ring together).
Everything mounted right up and I sighted in Sunday.  50+ rounds without zero drifting!Yep, Thought So
