Hello,

I just bought a Remington 700VS in .308 and I am about to order a SS10x42 to go along with it.  I am not very familiar with scopes and such and need some expert guidance in picking out a base and rings to go with my setup.  I was looking at the Leupold rings and bases and they seem to be the brand I want.  After looking at all the choices the Leupold Wizard offered I was more confused than ever. What would be the best choice?

Thanks!

Rob

not to cause any frustration herbut there is also the choice of badger rings/bases, but as for the leupold rings/bases, they have the std rings, but there are reports of them not being as sturdy, not breaking apart, but just not as steady of a mount. the PRW, and QRW has proven to be a good mount. but as far as the mark 4 mounts go, spend a little more and buy the badger rings, and i would just buy the mark 4 bases, and mount them to that, unless you want to use badger bases too.

Rob, I'm not sure where cory got his info about the STD mounts, but I can say with a high degree of confidence that they will not fail you and they are plenty strong for your 700VS. The "weaver style" PRW/QRW mounts are very strong, but are less ascetically pleasing to the eye, in my opinion. Either way, go with a 2 pc. base mount for ease of loading/unloading. Depending on what your intended use ( target shooting, tactical events etc.) the PRW would probably be the sturdiest of choices from Leupold.

sorry about that, i should have clarified that i have only heard 1 report of that. i have the standard rings on 3 guns, and have not had a single problem with them, i am very happy with them. i said that only to warn you of what i have heard, sorry for any confusion. but with leupold mounts, any of them are a great choice IMHO.

Your question is, "What would be the best rings and bases for my .308 700 VS mounting a SS 10x42?"....correct.

That would be Badger Ordnance 306-06 700 SA 1 piece base.....$139.95

and

Badger Ordnance 30mm standard height rings.....$149.95

The Leupold STD or "Redfield Style" have been around and unchanged for over 50 years so if you want to save some $$$$$ they will work fine.

rob9886, I thought you wanted to stay with Leupold. The PRW ring and bases would set you back around 65-70 bucks. If you wanted to go the Badger route for 280-300 bucks because you need that level of strength than you should add another 50+ dollars to have a gunsmith drill and tap your receiver to accept 8-40 screws and modify the bases as well. A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link, the standard base screws that is.

Again thanks for the replies.  I ended up going with Leupold PRW 30mm high rings and PRW 2 piece base.  It seemed to be the best setup in my price range.  Now I just need to find some free time, put it all together and head out to the range!
