Ringing in the season with Xmas gongs!!

We are visiting with my family down in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. My youngest brother is keen on shooting/guns, but has never indulged himself. I promised to bring my gear down and try to put him onto 550yds and 8inch gongs. He was very excited about this prospect.
A good clear day arrived on 24 Dec, so we packed the gear and headed for a nearby farm that had an open field we could use. I zeroed the rifle (it was dead nuts on, no adjustment required).
We then put up gongs at 200, 300 and 350 m. I dialed the dope for each distance, banged the gongs and handed over to my brother and my nephew (nephew aged 30 and never had this opportunity). They did well and hit the 200 and 300 m gongs. They missed on the 350, I checked the setting with a solid hit. With new confidence they rang in hits.
They were ecstatic, being their first time with decent equipment and making good hits.
Then out to the 550 yds(500m). Their eyes grew as the distance was paced out. (We had the 350m pegged with a range finder, so yes we had the correct distance). I checked my ballistic chart and needed 7.9MOA. This translated to 28 clicks on my scope. (yes clicks, not MOA,mils or inches but clicks). I doped for a 10mph cross wind, which translated to 22 clicks on my scope. I took the first shot, no hit. The second, no hit. Their was only long grass around the gong, so I had no idea were the bullet struck. I realized this would be pointless, so we took some backing board up to the target. I must add that this is the first time I have taken my new caliber out to this distance, so I had no prior knowledge of the dope required.
Whilst walking there I realized that a a line of trees were blocking the wind for the last 200 yds or so.
I came back and dialed back 11 clicks on the windage. First shot missed the target 1 inch high and exactly 12 0'clock. I had its number!!. Down 2 clicks (not MOA, mils etc). Next shot took the gong dead nuts! I was in. So I had it at a drop of 39inches and windage of 20 inches. That was 26 clicks up and 11 clicks windage on my scope. (Which I know does not dial exactly 4 clicks per MOA at 100yds, it is about 3 and 2/3 clicks)
So now over to my brother and nephew. First shot miss, then two hits. My nephew did the same, first shot miss, then two hits. Both their misses was about 1 inch off the gong.
They were pretty stoked and so was I. The equipment performed flawlessly and did not let me down.
