I seem to remember  seeing a thread where  the folks at SWFA answered  questions regarding bases and  proper ring size  for a particular  scope and rifle, can anyone  give me a link?

I don't recall seeing that thread, Sam, but maybe I have forgotten.
What info are looking for in particular?

It  was like a Q&A  thing, you would tell them what rifle and scope you had and then  tell them what rings  & bases you were considering and they would give advice on size, i.e.  high, med , low or give you other ring options, etc for your consideration. _popupControl();

 These kinds of questions are asked so often, it would be neat if somebody would put together some sort of a computer program that would allow you to enter make and model of rifle, scope and base and be able to view setups with various rings, etc. pulled from a wide database . A big project, I imagine, but it would sure take a lot of the mystery out of  ring height selection. I know that Leupold and others have charts, but they are hard to read and limited in scope, listing only that company's products, of course.

Here is some good info that a guy posted over at snipersparadise.com

1. Mount your base to the rifle.

2. Stack washers in even stacks on the mount about where your rings would go. Build the stacks up until you get the scope at the ideal height that you want.

3. Take one of the washer stacks and measure the height (preferrably with calipers).

You will now have your ideal saddle height (top of the base to the bottom of the scope body or tube). In the accompanying photo, that is height "B".

You will want to purchase a set of rings with a "B" height as close as possible to what you measured from your stack of washers

When purchasing your rings, if they sold using height "A" (top of base to center of ring) then you will need to:

Add .5" to your washer measurements if you have a 1" scope tube

Add .59055" to your washer measurements if you have a 30mm tube

Add .66929" to your washer measurements if you have a 34mm tube

Add .688975" to your washer measurements if you have a 35mm tube

Alternatively, you could subtract those numbers from the "A" height of the scope rings manufacturer's specs and that would give you the "B" height, it'll work either way.

I thought it was pretty good as well.  You still have to worry about the size of the objective but at least it gives you a place to start, and figuring the objective from that point is just simple math.
