And  even if it is not in stock at SWFA please realize that a tremendous amount of inventory goes in and out constantly especially new models where ones that have been around a while like the Conquest line are more often in stock. Think about the Zeiss and inquire what SWFA might be able to do for you. Try to talk to CFII when you call and refrence this thread on OT.  I have one of thes and its a great scope.

I also have two of these - the more expensive illuminated model but I also really really like this scope but its a lot more.  Sometimes its better to spend a little more and be happy in the long run.

Also realize that the Viper PST line has been out a tad longer than the HS line but its the same glass and true tactical knobs and tactical reticle so its another option. They make these in a more expensive First Focal Plane scope but its cool that tha reticle and adjutments are in the same increments.  The one with  1/10 mil  has a mil dot based system http://www.mildot.com/    http://www.mil-dot.com/ and the one with 1/4 moa  moves 1/4 inch per click at 100  or 1/2 in per click at 200 or 3/4 in per click at 300 and the reticle when matched  up to a target at 100 each mark on the reticle represents 1 inch at 100 or 2 inches at 200 or 3 inches at 300  so these are very cool scopes also.  SWFA has always been really helpful to me and Ive learened a lot about optics here.

I have 2 of the Vortex Viper HS 4-16x50mm. I like the scopes, otherwise I would not have gotten a second one 3 months later. I have had to use Vortex Customer Service in the past for another Vortex product and its just hard to really believe how good they are untill you need them. They are super! Excellent

...but I am not going to mislead anyone on a purchase so here are a few thoughts using my eyes.

1. For a comparison, the Nikon Monarch glass up to 9x is very crisp crystal clear; The Vortex Viper HS is not quite as crisp at the 9x (it must be the coatings?) .... but after that, the Vortex Viper HS maintains a good quality straight thru to 16x whereas the Monarch goes white on the edges and does not maintain a crisp view.   ...for your dollar, purchasing a Vortex HS 4-16x scope for clarity at 16x, you will get your moneys worth and be happy.

2. Fine cross hairs - there is a pro and a con to these very fine cross hairs (for that matter any scope with very fine cross hairs and without illumination)  Pro - I feel I can really pinpoint the exact point in a target where I want the bullet to go. My groups improved quite a bit having the thinner cross hairs.  Con - just as some have mentioned in a few reviews, the fine crosshairs might be difficult to see on black (can someone say BEAR!); also when at the range, black bullseyes make the thin crosshairs difficult to pinpoint the exact center of the target. I started using light color bullseyes to get around that at the range.  Indifferent - I have had this scope out for last years hunting season and I had no problem with low light\ fine cross hair target acquisition, again as long as the target is not black.  Illumination - I never appreciated an option for illumination until owning this scope with its fine cross hairs. The PST does have illumination but I am not going to pay $200.00 more for such a feature.

3. The one real not so happy feature this scope has is the rubber ribbed ring that turns the magnification up or down. One scope it has become loose. Vortex has no problem with repairing but also suggested I could try reapplying rubber cement. Will try but I would rather have had a solid lever, maybe like the regular Viper.

Overall, the scope performs and you will be happy.
Congratulations on your new purchase.

Finally got to compare a Viper PST 4-16x50 next to a Conquest 4.5-14x50. The Vortex is a good scope and the glass is clear, but the Conquest was a little bit clearer and was on sale for 799. So if on Monday when i call SWFA if they do not have the HS LR in stock i will go get the Conquest.

Which reticle does make a difference in price.  The other thing to consider is the sales tax issue so over the internet you do save the tax, but you pay shipping  Ask SWFA what they can do for you.

I buy all my optics from SWFA because I have gotten good customer service and because I have learned a lot about optics on this website that they sponsor.

Brad,

I hate my first post to be that of bad news, however, I thought you might want to know that the Viper HS LR is not slotted for release to the fall of 2012, good luck in your scope quest.

Welcome to the OT, Swamptoplains!

I have personally handled several of the Viper HS LR scopes (SFP).  I like the 4-16X50 model best, myself.

I think you are referring to the FFP Viper HS LR models, which (hopefully) will be out in the fall of 2012.

I did like the 4-16x50 PST, whis is the same glass, ive been told from Vortex directly. I didnt have a chance to focus the diopter to my eye but even without doing that i was able to make out handicap signs down the road about 4ooyds. The Zeiss was just a little bit brighter although Not a 16 power the difference wasnt enough for me to complain. I think im gonna spend the extra money and get the Zeiss For my hunting rifle. We have the 4-16X50 HS in stock but not in the LR version. We will beat any competitors price who is an Authorized Dealer.
