Ive been doing alot of research on rifle scopes online lately, its time to replace my old scope, ive been interested in the Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50. It has the high magnification that im looking for (living and hunting in Nevada there is a lot of open space) and a very attractive price, I was pretty much sold on the scope reading all the reviews from multiple websites, this one included, and today i decided to look at some scopes at the Bass Pro Shops here in town and looked through a swarovski, needless to say that scope was amazing but i dont want to spend that much money, my problem is they dont carry the vortex viper there, so im not able to look through one. Im sure it wont be as good as the swarovski but i would be happy if it is comparable to the Zeiss Conquest scopes. Any suggestions?

6.5 on the low end.. is that low enough for a hunting scope?  Wonder how the low light capabilites will be on this... the 50mm will help.  Can't remember the formula for figuring that out.
take em!

I have a Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40 on it right now, it never leaves 9x and it just isnt cutting it anymore, its starting to get darker, i think i managed to remove any coating that once was on the lenses. Ive wanted to get a better scope for a while and figured id splurge a little this week.

The Viper will not be as clear as the Conquest. The Vortex Razor line is more comparable to the Zeiss. I tried the 6.5-20 route and found out later the higher magnification was a waste for me. Get the 4.5-14 Conquest and be happy. Compairing the Conquest vs the FF ll at the same power, the Conquest image will appear much more distinct because of the better glass. Being able to see is in the glass not the magnification. The more magnification mostly magnifies the defects of the lenses.   The 4.5-14 is lighter which will not apply as much stress from the recoil into the system.

Objective size   50   divided by power setting  6.5x  =  7.69   and 7 is max you can use so plenty bright if you dial down to 6.5.  However  6.5 is a bit on the high side for stalking but fine from a stand. This would be a better choice:

I think the Viper is a step down from the VX3 and the Conquest. But is very close to the VXIII.

Ive been driving myself crazy on this for the last 3 months, I had been looking at the Zeiss Conquests just because of their reputation the price is a little higher than i wanted to go, so i started looking at the Vortex 1 because they were cheaper, 2 because of the reviews i had been reading on them and 3 their warranty. I started looking at what I was really going to be using it for and that would be hunting Mule deer, Antelope, and elk. Those are the intended targets for its future use. Ive been so back and forth on my thoughts about what scope i want or how much i want to spend that now i think i confused myself. From what i have read on here everyone has there own opinion on which glass is better. I just want to get a decent scope for a REASONABLE price and although the swarovski made me second guess myself i cant seem to bring myself to spend twice as much as i paid for the gun its going on. I guess what im really getting at is, for the money will the Viper HS Long Range 4-16x50 be the best deal for the money, features, optics quality excetera, it does only come in the bdc reticle which is fine because thats what my burris has in it and thats what im used to. So any more information on this will help me greatly. Im trying to stay around or under $600. i would like to have the higher magnification due to the fact that i have had situations where 400-500yd shots are not uncommon.

We all are constrained by our personal economy. There is almost always something better. If not now it will soon be out. Viper is a good scope. Conquest for several years has been the upper edge of the dividing line before you reach the Premim scopes. Be happy you can get the Viper. It is well above average of the scope crowd.

Let me suggest this since you have 1. determined the scope is not in stock at SWFA 2. cancled the SWFA order 3. ordered from a competitor who offered you 5% and free shipping.

Get the scope in do not mount it for a couple of days while you look at it under different lighting conditions to determine if it is really what you want. Do not alter it in any way or damage it and if you decide you do not like it as well as the Conquest you were considering then send it back.  While it will cost you about fifteen bucks UPS shipping that is the cost of doing business on the internet where you really cant easily side to side compare scopes. When I order a scope I call to be sure it is in stock. While talking to a real person at SWFA I would tell them the deal that their competitor offered you and so long as it can be verified they will definately beat the deal and over the years provide you the best in customer service that can be had.  Also note that on samplelist   http://www.samplelist.com/Riflescopes-C4.aspx#Zeiss you can occasionally find great deals on Zeiss scopes that were used as demo scopes at trade shows etc at significant savings. If you wanted a Conquest and watched the samplelist and called and talked to CFII at SWFA you could probably get into a Conquest.  I would still stay with the 4.5-14 though but my Conquest 4.5-14x44 Rapid Z800 came from samplelist and I love it and it cost me about what your Viper is costing you.

I would cancel regardless and since it is out of stock you not out anything. As it has been stated in previous posts SWFA gives a 110% guarantee plus excellent CS.

I canceled the order this morning. The "competitor " customer service was a bit rude when I asked why it didn't tell me the product wasn't in stock and why I wasn't notified. I'm a little ticked off about that. I did manage to find another website that has the scope in stock and much cheaper. I will call swfa Monday morning and find out if the scopes are in stock. If do then ill relay the website to them and go from there.
