I'm in the market for a new scope for my Tikka T3 300win.magnum...I am leaning towards the Swarovski American 4-12-50...My dilema is that alot of the stores in my area tell me that if a scope is under 1000.00 then the high end Leupolds, Nikon, etc. are pretty much the same.   Is this true?  How do these compare with the low end Swarovski?

Aphunter -

First off, I would tell you to consider a 42mm objective lens.  It will be lighter and rest lower on your gun than a 50 mm.

Having said that, I would generally agree that most scopes in the $500-$900 range are very similar.  My own opinion is that the Zeiss Conquest 3-9x42 is probably the best in that range.  The mid-range Swarovski are very, very good though, and you would not be at all disappointed with it.

one thing to consider here is that your shooting a 300 win mag in an already light weight rifle so eye relief will be a big factor, unless you like getting smacked in the eye by your scope.

In that price range I would add a couple more scopes to the list:

IOR Hunting 2.5-10x42 and Kahles KX 3-9x42

Personally, I am a big fan of IOR, but if eye relief is an issue, perhaps a cheaper Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 with a fixed eye relief of 4" is a good choice.
