I'm looking to change scopes on my Marlin 336cs 35 rem rifle. Right now I have a Bushnell sportsview on it. I was thinking of replacing it with the Simmons 4-12x40 ProSport Master Series . any thoughts

I'd stay away from Simmons.

Is there a particular reason you want atleast a 4X scope? For me I'd think a 3-9 would be more then plenty of magnification since most lever guns are for shorter range hunting. Plus, you will usually find the best deals in that common magnification range.
Again it all depends on your budget.

A 12x scope for a .35 Remington lever gun? Look at Bushnell's 4200 series 3x9. It is a favorite on the list for a reason. It very clear and out performs many higher dollar scopes. You will get a better field of view.

A 12 power seems like way over-kill for a .35 Rem. Even 9 power may be a little more than you need. With the new Hornady LeverEvolution elastomer tip spitzer bullets you should be able to reach out to 200 yards with your .35 Rem. If you stick with standard flat point bullets 150 would be a long shot.
I recommend looking at good quality fixed 4 powers, 2x7's, or even Scout Scopes with the XS mount system. http://www.riflescopes.com/products/282169B0922/xs_sight_sys tems_scope_mount.htm

I would put something like a 1-4x24 on it.

One question. Is there anything wrong with the Bushnell? You do not list what power it is, but I agree with everyone else, 9x is probably overkill, and you can save money, buy a fixed power scope, that will stand up to the recoil and hold its zero better and mount it with see through mounts, as with that caliber, I assume some brush hunting is going to be involved and at close range in the woods, iron sights would be better. Just a thought. My 336 is in a 30-30 caliber and wears a 4x Burris scope with see through mounts and fits me perfect. Good hunting. D. Overton North Carolina |
