Packing in to the "Sawtooths" on horseback in South Western Montana has to be the best country on Earth. You'll have the adrenaline flowing because it's Griz country, the game opportunities as far as Muleys and Elk are phenomenal, and when you're not hunting you can fish the high mountain basin lakes for Brookies. If you've ever been there you know what I'm talkin about. Heaven on Earth. They'd remember that trip. Give them .44 Ruger Stainless Redhawks for the trip as sidearms while fishing. Griz don't like .44 Redhawks too much.
You gotta carry it.

Boy, there are some great ideas here..... starting with the gift giving!  I can tell you this as far as uncles go, I've only hunted with one of mine and he's by far my favorite.  Unfortunatly, there is a bit of a family squabble now, and I havn't been able to see him much.  Not that I wouldn't want to, but only chance is at family gatherings that he isn't coming to right now.  Anyway, I have lots of memories of him and they mean way more to me than if he'd give me a gun.  I sure hope we get to do another hunt sometime.

If a hunt is out of the question, then I'm torn between a few ideas.  I have 2 BAR's and they are awesome.  If I get another, it's going to be a magnum, most likely a 300WM.  But a rimfire is something they would actually shoot more.  These aren't in the same price range of a BAR, but I have had so much fun with my Savage 9317.  I have the synthetic stock with regular blued barrel.  Ammo is pretty cheap and they flat out shoot!  You could "class" it up some by putting a really nice scope on it.  And they are making it in the Classic variation now as well.  Don't get me wrong, its not a Anshutz or even a Browning, but its a nice looking rifle that would be great to shoot!
take em!

They already have a good shotgun and a good rifle.  I would round it out with a good handgun (or two).

A .22 for learning and practice (think Ruger in a revolver or auto), and a centerfire for real work (your choice or theirs).

Timber, I would say take them on a hunt.  I had the privilege of going on a hunt with my uncle.  1st time I went deer hunting.  It was in IA and I used the shotgun I received from my dad.  Memories for a lifetime.

I plan to buy my 2 very young sons each a side by side or over and under shotgun of value and put them away for college graduation. I do not think that they will appreciate them until then but could be wrong. Nice that you are doing this for your nephews. I agree with the trip idea however since you have given them guns.

thomas - when I first read your post, I thought, that's a long ways off and he'd be better to save the money - who knows what technology will change during that time frame.  THEN I thought about what might change in the politcal area..... maybe you'd better buy a couple of rifles while you're at it!!!
take em!

Nice double shotguns do not seem to be doing anything other than getting more expensive. I will likely buy a couple of nice Browning Superposed Belgium made guns from the 60's in 20 ga. Rifle technology seems to improve as time goes by. Appears to me, with a few exceptions, that most rifles depreciate. Amen though to the political concerns.

thomas:

You need to be careful of the "Browning Superposed Belgium made guns from the 60's in 20 ga".  I bought one in the 60's.  It handled like a dream, but the trigger would not fire the second barrel on cold mornings.  (Nothing like a single-shot double on a quail hunt!)  Browning did not (could not?) fix it when I sent it to them.  I sold it to a high-priced shotgun dealer.

Also, they had a problem with "salt stocks" during some of those years (i.e., some of the stocks were apparently exposed to and contained some salt.  Bad news!)  You can check this on the internet.

If I were buying an over-under shotgun now,  I would probably pick a Beretta 12 gauge.  With the light loads now available in 12 gauge, this could be loaded to 20 gauge or 12 gauge levels.  Their 20 gauges look a little light in weight.  (A 20 ought to go between 61/2 and 7 pounds, or it will kick like a 12.)  The 20 gauge Ruger would be a fine choice,  because it's a great shotgun and Ruger gives first-rate factory service.  However, it might not appreciate in value as much, if that's what you are looking for.

A lot of single-trigger double-barrel shotguns develop trigger trouble.  We've had that happen to three different prestige makes.  John Barsness wrote a great article in the March 2009 American Rifleman  pointing out the virtues of two-trigger doubles and American pump shotguns.  After 40 years of shotgunning, I couldn't agree with John more.   (Are you listening John?  Thanks!)

After owning and firing lots of different shotguns in our family (over-unders, side-by-sides, autos and pumps) I  ditched them all and kept two Remington 870s in 20 gauge and 12 gauge.  They work all the time, every time, and I used the 20 gauge to earn an NRA "Distinguished Expert" shotgun badge.

I would go with the hunting trip. Get what ever they shoot mounted.  Not only do they get to display a trophy every time someone ask about the mount you kind of relive the hunt. Priceless...  If you are looking to gt a gun I would go with the rim fire idea, nothing like a good .22 to just bum around with. I think hand guns are to much of a personal preference to buy someone but that does not mean I would not accept one.

All great ideas.  22's and a trip sound great.  I haven't been able to get onto SWFA website for days.  Has anybody else had this trouble?  Got to go for now.  Thanks again everybody.

Is the T/C the best 22LR rifle out there now?  Easy to clean the action?  I handled one and was impressed with the heft and general feel but never shot one.
