I've been looking at several scopes lately. I'm going to replace a cheap scope on a Rem 700 chambered in 270. The rifle will primarily be used for whitetail.

I've always used a "plex" reticle or a variation there of. The 4 and 4A reticles intrigue me. For starters, what's the point? In your opinion, does the 4 and 4A reticle hold an advantage over the standard plex/duplex reticle, if so how?

Input?

For me the advantage is if the posts are thicker in the 4/4A (which they usually are) than the plex type for better low light visibility.
I'd say they would be a great choice on a whitetail scope.

Generally, the #4 Absehen is easier to see when it gets dark. The 3 bold posts can be used to bracket an animal when you can no longer see the center cross.
Otherwise, I hear some who say the wider posts of the 4A cover too much in day light.

I would get a #4 over the 4A, There is too much open area in the middle of the reticle between the heavy posts. In low light the heavy posts are so far apart that your exact aiming point would be harder to determine.

For my 50+ eyes 4, 4A and 1 are much easier to see than a any kind of plex.

I like the fact that the upper vertical post is not large and blocking my field of view.  That helps me tell if there is something I need to be aware of  before I take my shot.

I've used two Leupold scopes with their Hvy Plex reticle.  I LIKE them but I could do w/o the vertical part of the reticle completely or it not being so thick.
