Hello All:
I just received, from the SampleList, a Leupold XV-R 2-7x33 Firedot Ballistic reticle scope and Talley 1 piece silver low rings for my Marlin 336ss .30-30 (20 inch barrel). Use is whitetail deer and hogs here in Middle Georgia. Reticle is this one: So far, it mounted nice with the rifle and I am please with the size, relief and clarity. This is the first Leupold I may keep. What I am perplexed about is how to sight her in to use the Ballistic markings - I have never had anything but plex reticles or iron sights. The scope came with no documentation but what I downloaded from Leupold was not specific to this reticle. I hunt with Hornady Leverevolution 160 Gr. with MV of 2280 out of my 20 inch barrel - any gurus out there have any thoughts? |

My suggestion is sight it in just like you did with your other scopes with plexes. If you want to use it as a holdover then you will need to spend some time at different ranges verifing on EACH power what the different marks will work out to me. |

Thanks for the reply.
I will sight it in, probably at 150, and hopefully the lower lines will be useful at 7x after some testing. I just wish the MOA setoffs for the marks for this reticle were known to limit guess work at the range. The Hornady rounds are about $1.25 a piece and I am a cheapskate. I am usually not a fan of a "busy" reticle and I guess since I have one I am trying to make use out them. |

The Leupold catalog says the circle subtends 4.4 MOA at 7X.
If you sight in at 150, you should hit at the bottom of the circle at about 210. That means you would hit somewhere inside the circle at any distance from 20 yards to over 200. The top hash mark (4.8 MOA) would be on somewhere around 270. Or you could sight in at the top of the circle at 100, be zeroed at about 170, and at the bottom of the circle at 225. Depends somewhat on altitude, scope height, etc. And you'd have to shoot it to know. |

Thanks for the replies - found the specs in the leupold catalog, they are on their own page, not with other ballistics reticles and I just missed them.
I am going to sight in at 150 if I can get good groups I will try the other hashes. My 336 has a good trigger job so maybe I can hit some paper @ 150 + with leverevolution rounds. For 200 + this is not my rifle of choice, but let's see what she will do. Thanks again. |
