This may seem like a silly question but I ask cuz I don't know.

Does a scope come from the factory set at "zero"?

In other words I was adjusting my scope at the range the other day. I was OK at 25 yds, then tried adjusting at 50, then 100 and by then I was off the paper with no idea where my shots were going.

To start over, back at 25 yds, how do I know where my scope was to begin with?

New rifle and scope, never fired or had any adjustments done... Ruger American .270 and Nikon Prostaff.

You can count the clicks, if you really want to know. Most scopes are sent out at a "mechanical zero".

what he means is count the clicks from stop to stop, and then come back halfway - on both windage and elevation.  Then you're at mechanical zero.  If you were on paper at 25 and off at 100 I'd check my mounts.

Just sight in your rifle 2" low at 25 yds and you'll be near bullseye at 100.
