I absolutely fell off the deep end recently and purchased the new Zeiss Victory Diavari FL in 6-24x56.  It is a sweet piece of glass.

I was mounting the scope to my rifle today (with assistance from my hunting buddy Rancid Coolaid).  Here was what we were working with:

Rifle: Remington 700 PSS with a 20" barrel (threaded for a can)
Stock: AICS 1.5 (with adjustable cheek piece)
Base: Badger Ordnance 20 MOA
Rings: Badger Max-50 Standard Height Rings (Height = .823")

We ran into a few little issues:

1. The rubber around the objective Butler Creek just barely kissed the barrel.  This didn't concern me very much as I didn't think there was any pressure being exerted.
2. There is a collar around the tube of the scope where the turrets intersect that precludes a lot of adjustment for eye relief and/or comfort behind the scope.  Of course, this is exacerbated by the use of the wider Max-50 rings.
3. The scope sat really low.  With the adjustable cheek piece down flush with the gun, I could get a decent sight picture, but just barely at 24x.

Rancid suggested that I consider the Badger USMC DMR rings (Height = 1.031") that are a combination of the Maximized and the Max-50.  It would give me some more flexibility with eye relief with one of the two rings being a little more narrow, but I would still have the wider Max-50 ring in front with three bolts exerting less force on the tube.

Another option is that I go with the High Maximized Rings (Height = 1.125").  This gives me rings that are more narrow, but I'm not sure that's a bad thing.  With an adjustable cheek piece, I'm pretty comfortable sitting a little higher up.

I plan on running both supersonics and subsonics through it - but there's not a lot of recoil on such a heavy gun.

Anyone have a strong opinion on the Max-50 vs. the Maximized?

Thanks,
REMF

I had a Butler Creek on a 3.5-10x50 Leupold that was just kissing the barrel. I doubt there was much stress on the scope or barrel. It bothered me enough that I no longer have it on. I don't want anything other than the scope/ring interface to have contact.
I'm not a user of tactical mount systems, yet. But, I use narrower Talley QD rings on guns that kick far heavier than . 308 and they have never had a scope slip.
I think that anything Jeff recommends in regards to a gun of your type you could take to the bank, especially regarding Badger. I got a good chuckle seeing you were threaded for a can and you know RC.
Good luck with your awesome set up.

Doug

I have one set of max 50's naturally they are the ultra high for an AR and Im certain they weigh more than the whole rifle.  I think the the medium high rings are quite adequate but if you want to use the ones the Corp uses knock yourself out.  I'm not sure how you thought you could suck a 56mm objective down that close to the barrel but I bet it was an interesting conversation I would have loved to have been there.   I do have a front lens cap that I had to cut the bottom part out of and tape to the scope to have any room between scope and barrel so you are not the only one to suffer with ring height selection.   Wouldnt it be nice to just have multiple sets of each size sitting on the work bench to grab the one you wanted.   That was what blew me away the first time I walked into GAPrecision in Kansas City - all those Badger Rings just sitting there then I found out they come out of the same shop - duh my first comment was -- Ive never seen that many badger rings in one place before.  Then I found out why.  Shocked

Well, RC has the standard height rings on a tactical rifle with a 56mm Hensoldt on it, and they were high enough.  That's where I got the idea.  Yes, all my conversations with Jeff are interesting!  He is a valuable resource.

Yep, now I have to ship the rings back to Chris and wait for solution #2.  Meanwhile, I'm really big hat - no cattle.  I'd love to get this stuff to the range and try it out.

BTW, I bought the weapon from Jeff.  It's a tack driver, and I have high expectations.  Don't tell him I said so, but he's a pretty phenominal shot with a rifle.

Dove hunting with a 12 gauge is another story...

I just ordered the same scope and have been sitting here taking measurements on heights for rings and figure the Seekins Mediums @ .87" should just clear with a Murphy Precision 20moa rail.My barrel taper is 1.25 in the first 3.5" then 1.1" to .92" at the muzzle. I mounted a 6-24x50 in loopy low rings on it and took the measurements off that.
