I am needing some info on what is the best route to go in regards to getting a replacement barrel for my Remy LTR.  I wouldnt mind getting a factory replacement like the one that came with it, but i also am up to hearing anyone's opinon as to what route i should take..

Thanks!

JS

where to start??

consider something exotic like a 3 land PacNor

all the big names make good stuff

you should think more along the lines about your use and special twist rates, or even a caliber change based on the magazine size and bolt face.

Does the barrel need to be replaced?  If so, all the custom barrel manufactures are good.  PacNor, Shilen, Hart, Badger, Brown, Lilja, Krieger, Rock Creek, Douglas, Shaw, H-S Precision and McGowen, just to name a few.  Personally, I have only used McGowen on one occaision, as the custom rifle that I purchased came with a McGowen barrel and when it needed to be replaced, I wanted to put the same barrel on it.  It is a 340 Wby. and shoots tight groups at 100 yards.  100% pleased.

Probably the most important part of a rebarreling job is the gunsmith who will install the barrel you end up going with. All the makers previous mentioned are capable of producing a top flight barrel. The factory take-off will be the least expensive route and it is pretty easy to find a brand new one or one that has very few rounds down the barrel ready to go. This is especially true with Remington 700's. The Douglas option is probably the least expensive custom barrel to go with and probably will have the shortest turn around time. Next would be PacNor on turn around time. From there, you are into 5-600 dollar rebarreling from the big guys like Hart, Lilja, Krieger, Shilen, Spencer, Schnieder, Broughton and Rock Creek. I would stay away from Shaw regardless of cost as they are very inconsistant. Hope this helps you out.

Roy
