Exploring pros and cons of using a remote camera at the target instead of using a spotting scope when target shooting at the range. Any and all  information relating to this would be appreciated. Sources of remote cameras, effectiveness of remote cameras, cost, mechanics of setting up the system, etc.

Just do a search for (wireless video camera transmitter and receiver) Some units under $150 can transmit up to 500 yards. I have remote cameras on my barn and they provide an excellent picture around the barn and of the pond. There are so many models out it would be pointless to focus only on 1 or 2. I can plug my receiver into a tv, vcr. DVR or my laptop. There are so many sizes and setups you will find something in most any price range. Probably less than 1/2 the price of a spotter. There are even deer cams that will transmit to your cell phone Miles away. Pros No Mirage. Cons maybe 5lbs of extra to carry to the range. Be sure to set to the side and place a shield between the camera and the shooter. A lot cheaper than a $3,000 spotter for looking at targets.

Al in SC,

Had some buddies who looked into the same thing for 1000 yrds and the signal strength needed a repeater to operate.  The power supply required for the whole mess and everything else makes it somewhat more of a project than it would appear at first look.  At 500 yrds it might be a viable option.

Disclaimer: (I am going on memory from a similar discussion on a different board – Hopefully I understood/remember correctly and apologize in advance for any errors)

dsr
