Sad story. All it makes me think of is what I was taught at a very young age.
Never point a loaded gun at anything you do not want to shoot, kill, or blow up and what is behind it. All guns are to be treated as if they are loaded. I never have relied on a safety and never will. |

For that matter I never trust someone else to hand me an unloaded weapon. I always clear one when handed to me.

Sad thing to have a family member killed in such away, but 99% of all accidents could be avoided if it weren't for human error.

Even if this was not an election year, I would not believe a thing in the Lamestream press about firearms........

I'm sorry, but it was her fault for failing to point the rifle in a safe direction.

Proper safety pratcices would save alot of "accidental" deaths.
SNIP
"Remington never instituted a recall of the five million Remington 700s already sold"
"But the customer complaints, and more than 75 lawsuits, have alleged the 700 is susceptible to firing without the trigger being pulled."
5 million sold and only 75 lawsuits ? I would have to say that if there were a true issue here you would see a larger percentage of lawsuits just my opinion though.

Boy, this is old news. There was a trigger issue, it was dealt with, and the new triggers are much safer. I remember this the first time, in 2002.
There is no substitute for proper gun safety. I teach it to my 6 yoa son with his toy rifle. To my son, that toy gun is always loaded. |

I did not know about the issue. What I watched last night was very saddening. In close to 40 years of owning an shooting Remington rifles I have never had an AD with one. My only AD with any firearm was at the '88 PAC Fleet matches, I had a Navy owned Gold Cup go full auto on me and empty 5 round magazine. Talk about timed fire. LOL! But I can't blame the man that lost his son for hammering big green. But like other have said here ALWAYS keep the muzzle of a weapon pointed away from something you don't want to destroy.

How many caught the 1 hour show last night on this? There was a lot more to the story than just the little boy dying (I agree with all of you that it was a mistake on her part).

Im a little concerned myself, I own no 700 s . Now I have a 5R coming in tomorrow and I have another model 700 that Ive bid on....
The show last night showed either military or police , sorry I cannot remember. Showed them setting the rifles off by touching the safety. NOT the trigger, it was not good.. Very dangerous, I was shocked....Perhaps these were older models? before they changed the triggers? Scooter was it before?

Don't read into it to much. It is just a scare tactic being used by the media right before an election. I have drop tested my 700several time. Literally holding it waste high and letting it fall to the ground, an no problems at all.
Front Sight the school I attend see's probably in the thousands of 700 rifles every year, and I have never heard them complain of those problems in the classes I have taken and they are pretty candid about problem guns they see. Sure you will have the freak guns here and there, but they can be found in any make that has had a part wear out or a failure. Edited by supertool73 - October/21/2010 at 10:34 |

Lifetime warranty and excellent customer service don't mean a thing when your gun fails during a zombie attack.

If you're getting a new rifle it will have the X-Mark Pro trigger, which is the new design. I wouldn't worry about either, personally. My LTR has the 40-X style trigger, which I actually prefer since it has vertical grooves in the trigger. It's set pretty light - 2.5 lbs- so I'm careful with it but have never had it go off unless I pulled the trigger.

Yep Guys the rifle will be here probably today!!! Ok, I will not worry about it and just move on.. I still wish you guys had watched this show last night. It was pretty spooky to see someone just touch a safety and se the rifle go off.. Im not talking about 1 incident either.. They had lots of examples of this happening. People missing body parts, etc. etc.

I just got my SPS Tactical a month back and have had no problems or worries. It has the X-Mark Pro and was designed to compete with Savages Accu-trigger. I'm absolutely thrilled with how well it shoots thus far (its my most accurate rifle by a decent margin). Im sure there are a few lemons that came through the production lines over the years but this again is a major scare tactic in my opinion. People need to practice safe gun operating habits at all times as well. I do not keep my target or hunting rifles loaded in the house so there would be no reason for me to have to unload it before cleaning. Common sense goes a long way.

And why the hell would you allow someone to be in front of a loaded weapon like this woman did??? They knew it was loaded (in the house no less) and then the kid is standing in front when it goes off.
