Hey guys I'm new to the forum and new to long distance shooting so I have a few questions.  I work at Remington and just recently purchased a Remington Model 700 5R Mil Spec.  I have read some great reviews on this rifle but I am quite unfamiliar with long distance shooting at 500+ yards.  Since I basically stole this gun for the price I got it, I was wanting to put a good set of optics on it that would allow me to shoot out to 1000 yards.  Since I also get about a 50% discount on Leupold optics I was thinking about going with a Mark 4 ER/T 8.5-25x50 M1 or the Mark 4 LR/T 8.5-25x50 M1.  I know that the ER/T is front focal point and the LR/T isnt...however, is this too much scope?  Any input would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

I would scale back to the 6.5-20 at most, even the 4.5-14 would fit it better IMO

That is to much IMO.  I think the 4.5-14x or the 6.5-20x would be a better fit.  6.5x is a lot for the bottom end IMO, but if it is a range only gun it should be fine.

Personally I don't like magnification much past 15x.  But others like a lot more.  If you can get out and try a few at those distances it would be helpful.

I agree on the magnification. No need to overdo it. Ordinarily, I'd suggest some other optics to consider, but 50% off is hard to beat. Don't tell the boss, but you could always sell the scope later...maybe make a 30-50% profit off it and get something else. The 5R does really well with 175 gr. boat tails.

At 50% off, Leupold is worth buying.  I too to stay at or under a max power of 20X.

Is your 5R in 308?

Yes it is a 308.  So with the help I've narrowed it down to the 4.5-14x50 or the 6.5-20x50.  I would also like to use this gun for hunting, so I'm assuming the best choice would be the lower magnification of the 4.5-14x50?  Would you all also reccomend the ER/T over the LR/T for long distance precision shooting?

I don't mean to pry, but do you work at the Ilion NY plant? I live up here and don't know a good place to shoot further than 300 yards. If you know of a 500 yard range would you mind sharing? Big Grin

Welcome to the OT!

I own the same rifle & have a 4-16x50 riding on her.A great all around shooter.Make sure you put a good set of rings on what ever scope you purchase.Personally I like the Aadland & one piece Talleys.

Good shooting & season her slow.
