hey there everybody...i was just wondering if anyone had any idea how the remington vietnam era m40 shoots....

i heard that the ones issued in vietnam were good out to about 800 yards...

the one they sell now have a 24 inch heavy barrel and the 700 action... i was wondering if this would be a good gun for ling range shooting out to 1000 yards, with the .308 and match ammo..

what does everyone think....and if u have one or have shoot one how do u like it

thanks

It should shoot just fine depending on shooter, sights, and ammunition used.

Thery're really nothing special, but that barrel weight and stock configuration lends itself to very steady sling position shooting, and cramped bipod prone shooting.

FYI, barrel length doesn't have too much to do with accuracy at distance.  The Mil teams at Perry do fine from the 1k yard line with 20 inch barrels.  Choose the right bullet for the available downrange velocity.

.308 is about an 800 yd cartridge the bullet drops sub sonic at that range and developes some instability, it will go further but with less accuracy.

Have to  disagree with that statement, based on decades of personal use of the 308 winchester cartridge in various rifle and bullet weight configurations.

There are instances where a combination of poor ammunition and poor barrels make the statement credible but on the whole it is not representative of the experience of the shooting community.

308 with 175's @ 1002 yards confirmed, in a fairly brisk wind.  Wind call was within 0.25 moa, I blew the elevation call by full moa

308 win ( different rifle) using 168 amax at 1000 yards in a no wind situation.

Shots are POA/POI  Covered that group with a quarter.

And this is an example of the shooter having a really crappy day from the 1000 yard line.  It's still under 1 moa at that distance, and impact is centered on poa in the corner of the target.
