With a tactical shotgun they have a tendency to get some rather rough treatment if they are used for tactical entry. My first thought is to use the fixed sight but bearing  in mind that things do happen at night also means that a small sight like an EOTech is a very good choice or the Aimpoint system above which having two rings gives it a more solid mounting system. There are a couple of companies making the saddle type mount and you remove the two pins that hold the trigger assembly and attach the mount with two bolts. It seems like it would destroy the finish but your only real problem is if you get it wet and dont get the mount off and clean and oil the area. (Naturally removing the base can require re-zeroing the shotgun).  If you are using buckshot I would go with the 4 moa which the red dot will cover 4 inches at 100 yds. Tactical shotguns are close range weapons as the spread of the buckshot pattern can not be predicted with sufficient certainty at much over 50 yds.  I would recommend trying multiple brands of buckshot at 50yds to see how they pattern and select what holds the tightest group, note try different sizes of buckshot also.  I am

Why?

Save your money, put a good ghost ring rear sight and a front sight post NOT BEAD on it and a surefire bright white light forend with a presssure switch.  It'll be cheaper and better.  You need something that is ready to use right now for bumps in the night.  Cheaptrick is going to rock me for this one, but if you don't have a red dot that will stay on for long periods of time and have to turn on before use, which pretty much rules out any battery operated ones except Aimpoints, then it isn't worth sh*t, it becomes extra and un-needed weight.  If you absolutely have to have a red dot then get the one that Cheaptrick posted or a Comp C3, M2, M3, or M4.  Stay away from the ones with magnification.  Stay away from EoTech's or Bushnells.  They have a four hour auto shutoff and eat batteries like fish drink water.  Now if you were talking about a carbine then hellz yeah slap a red dot on it with some good back up irons, but in the shotguns case my first recommendation will be more than adequate.

I think the Aimpoint 9000L model which is a 1x but mounts with two 30 mm rings would get the red dot lower on the shotgun. This is not the 2x model. I also think two points of attachment is better than one for this application.  I like this set up for a slug gun which is what we are using here most of the deer season, it also seems to be popular with turkey hunters using ultra full choaks.  It does make sense to use something that is always on like Trijicon sights but for most  use there is time  to turn on the dot and if there isnt time all you have is a clear circle of 1x glass and  I'm pretty sure I could  hit a man size target in the middle of  the night in my house with a shotgun sporting an aimpoint 1x that is turned off and if time allows me to turn it on so much the better.  Bear in mind I have one of these and a Comp M4 with the forever AA battery life    ( but comp M4 sits up too high for this). The mini sight Cheaptrick mentioned is made to ride piggy back on other optics.

True you could use the the center of the glass on an Eotech when it's not on or you don't have time to turn it on.  However it will not help you identify the target, which is way more important than having a red dot that may or may not be on.  I stand by my first commentary, his money would be much better spent on a white light forend.  Train like you fight, if it's gonna be pulling double duty as a fun gun and used for home defense it needs to be setup the same way for both.  You will always default back to what you're used to and if somethings different you're going to be ass over tea kettle trying to use it under stress.
