I have been looking into purchasing one of these rifles and have myself torn between two calibers. I have narrowed it down to the .308 and the 300 SAUM. My question is about the recoil. Is there much noticeable difference between the two, and if so is it worth the extra punch. I find myself leaning toward the SAUM for its superior long range ballistics. Will be shooting at ranges out to 1500 yrds. Any advice would be much appreciated and thanks in advance guys.

Welcome to OT, aldribm_123!

There is quite a bit of difference between the recoil from a .308 and .300 SAUM, but I don't find the latter to be objectionable.  I haven't ever shot the .300 SAUM, so I'm basing my opinion on the similar but very slightly hotter .300 WSM.  Personally, I don't care for the SAUMs in general.  The WSMs are better and easier to find ammo for, but that particular rifle isn't chambered in .300 SAUM, so that's a non-issue in this case.  I don't understand Big Green's decision to create the SAUM cartridge family just to say "me too" when the WSM family was already more popular and the SAUMs basically duplicate the WSMs.

........................I read that you will be shooting out to 1500 yards. Are you going to use this rifle as strictly a bench/target and or varmit rifle? Any other type of hunting? Extra long range punch for what type of game?

The `08 Remy website does not list a 300 SAUM for their VTR..... Older model?

It will be used for both. Mainly paper punchin but I am also an avid deer hunter. The ranges that I specified will be for bench shooting. The longest range I get on deer sized game in my area is around 600 to 700 yards.

you won't be shooting an LTR to 1500 yards regardless of caliber.

Technically, Remington only sells them to law enforcement, but the rifles are available through various distributors to civilians.

.................................No wonder I couldn`t find it!............You will have some more recoil with the SAUM.

But as with anything else, rifles included, when you gain something (extra ballistic performance) over here, you sacrifice something else over there (harsher recoil).

A 20" blaster uh??? I like it already!Naughty

I gots me a 7.5 lb. w/scope 300 WSM Ruger Frontier with a 16.5" tube, that exceeds 24" `06 performance. That Remy VTR with scope will weigh about a pound or so more than mine and therefore will have less recoil..........I love shooting mine! What fun! Not bad at all.

1500 yards?  Think .338 Laupa or .50

1500 yards is going to be questionable with a 20" barreled gun.  I would get the 700P in 300 WM if you really want to shoot that far.  The extra 6 inches of barrel and the extra velocity the WM will give you will make all the difference in the world at those distances.  It will take bigger pills than what you can shoot out of the SAUM, and you are going to need them to reach that distance consistantly.  Optimally you will be best of shooting 210 berger vld's or something similar.  190's would probably do it, but the heavier bullets will make it so much easier.   That .300 LTR would make a great 1000 yard gun but 1500 is really stretching it.
Lifetime warranty and excellent customer service don't mean a thing when your gun fails during a zombie attack.

............................Sounds like you want a long range 1500 yard paper punchin rifle, as well as a handy shorter 20" barreled deer rifle all wrapped up in one??

What is more important for you to own?.... A handier, shorter, more compact hunting rifle or a long range target rifle. You can`t get the best of everything or the best of both worlds in just one rifle. You will have to compromise somewhere.

Unless you have the right scope or equipment, which calculates windage and trajectory in order to eliminate alot of guess work, a 600 or 700 yard shot on deer sized game is a risky proposition. I wouldn`t try that distance on deer sized game with either a fast 7 or even a fast 30 unless the right tactical scope and equipment is used.

I did see on TV, a successful 900 yard shot on antelope with a custom 26" or 28" tubed 7 Rem mag from "Gunwerks" with one of those big tactical Husqervanas (spelled wrong?) scopes mounted on it. That rifle and equipment is designed specifically for extended range plains or mountain hunting. It is certainly not a handy carry rifle.
