Tell me about it!! A day late and 10 dollars short. Also heard today that if you were lucky enough to find 22lr ammo at a gunshow you'd pay 60.00 a brick to take it home. I still want to know where all the ammo is going. The NRA folk need to find out if they don't already know. The manufactorers say they are putting it out there but they won't say to who!!

I believe I read on another site that all the ammo manufactures have decided to allocate all components to ammo production right now and are not release any components out right now to try to keep up with demand.  Same thing happened in 08 if I recall.  22lr manufactures are trying to capitalize by limiting runs on that to produce the higher priced centerfire rounds in demand right now.

Well if you go with some of the conspiracy theories the banks are choking off the working capital to the firearms industry to in effect shutdown things - basically another way to get the guns out of folks hands so to speak.

Black powder can be made in the back yard (don't recomend making it in the house). The trick is grinding it into the proper size for it's intended use, without meeting your maker.

I saw bricks of 22 ammo at Lincoln last weekend marked $50.00 - but I didn't see anyone buy any or carry around like they just did.  You'd have to want it pretty bad to pay that... and be somewhat of a dumbass in my book!

I heard it was 60.00 a brick at the Raleigh show last week and they sold out the first day. I guess the feeling of necessity over rides intelligence.

Actually we are feeling the shortage of Ammo and Bullets here in South Africa as well, propellant isn't an issue as we can't get any from overseas. And use the local Somchem propellant. I've been waiting for 6 weeks to get Barnes 30 cal bullets, been told definately next week. Don't even ask for CCI 22lr ammo, only ammo or bullets available is what the dealers had left over from last year.

Is it easing off where you are, yet? It sure isn't around here...

In case you don't know about this local distributor- Gene Sears Supply (3rdGenShootingSupply)- they are getting delivery trucks in, but it goes right back out the door, still worth checking if you really need something. Prices are competitive with Powder Valley, or any one else... I've managed to stock up on everything in the past few weeks, but had to make several attempts.

I think it's mostly like this. People just seem to be stocking up. In response to the hoarding, I felt compelled to order 8 lbs. of Varget. First time I ever bought some non-locally. And, of course, my purchase in its small way contributed to the general shortage...thus fueling the fire even more...and so it goes...and so it goes. Eventually everybody will just have too much or be so flat broke they have to stop.

I try to be cheerful & optimistic & objective BUT this makes me unhappy.

My component buying has picked up since November 7, 2012 and I thought I was in good shape until I inventoried my .22LR supply.

My guess is that the component shortage is caused by dread, anxiety, distrust, and in most cases common sense. If it is on sale it's gone. I don't think there is any government conspiracy working (yet?).

If they Feds were not enough, now certain states are pushing for "background checks" on ammo purchases and only "face to face" ammo sales. Certain countries ban sales or possession of smokeless powder and military calibers such as .223 & .308.

Being the cheerful & optimistic person that I am, my guess is that the component shortage will abate somewhat by December 2013 (just a guess with no basis).

Be aware the storage limit is 10,000 primers per residence and any powder amount greater than 20lbs and less than 50lbs, per residence, must be stored in the orginal containers inside of approved containers - wood (lumber) with walls at least 1 inch thick.  I use boxes made from 2X8's & 12's and store in a cool dry spot.  The somewhat less than 3.5 wide and 6.5 & 9.5 high powders fit inside.

I guess if you wanted to be in compliance with regs another house for the next 10,000 primers and 50 lbs of powder storage could be bought with the current low mortgage rates.
