I went to a retailer today that sold both the Nikon Monarch and the Bushnell 4200 Elite. I asked to look at a 3-9X40 4200 and a 2.5-10X42 Monarch. I adjusted the power to 3X on BOTH scopes. I was indoors just around noon. As I looked around I focused on different items around the store, then I would change scopes and compare visually what I had just been looking at. Time and time again the MONARCH looked brighter, sharper and just all around visually better. I finally focused in on a bottle of Remington Gun cleaner an aisle away. I could read the words on the can with the Monarch (still on 3x mind you). When I swapped to the 4200 I could just see there was words on the can and then they were still kinda fuzzy (it was still on 3x as well). I am so glad I was able to compare these as I was actually leaning toward the 4200 before this comparison. Well, I'm now trying to decide on which Monarch I want for my 30-06!!!! I don't know if I want to get the Primos or save up a lot more and get a 3-12 Monarch. Only advice I can give is to find somewhere you can hold both and compare whatever scopes you are interested in. Then buy yourself a cold refreshment drink to quinch your thirst you worked up from the stressful comparison at your local retailer. Then you can come home and order from SWFA with the knowledge you just learned! Big Grin  --Bboy623

you cannot judge a scope inside any building friend, as far as the fuzzy goes you can adjust the eyepiece to add or subtract diopter to clear it up. im not saying that the monarch is a bad scope cause its not and you wont see much difference between them even outside. i will say that making a choice on any scope just by looking through inside under florescent lights wont give you an accurate account of a scope.

Just to get a better idea of how the two compare, I would have compared a 2.5-10x40 Elite to the Monarch 2.5-10x42 or two 3-9x40's but that's just me.

Yup at the power you compared them, for me the monarch has the advantage in image brightness though am not sure about clarity as they seem similar to me. The 4200 though has the rain guard which may come in handy if you hunt in bad weather. If you go higher power though 16x and above, i would say the 4200 has better image as the monarch seems to be more prone to sun glare reflection on the inner front tube of the scope when set at hi power. Pyro--can you elaborate? I figure if I can tell a difference between them INSIDE, I could definitely tell a difference between them OUTSIDE.

Roy---I was trying to tell the difference between the glass on 4200s vs Monarch. I personally don't think the power range of the scope has anything to do with it. I did put BOTH of them at 3x to try and compare apples to apples. Granted the Monarch had a 2mm bigger bell, but I doubt that makes that much of a difference. Am I wrong?==Bboy623

The difference is that you are comparing a 3x zoom range scope to a 4x zoom range scope when you compare a 3-9 to a 2.5-10. I don't know about the Monarch, but I know the Elite 4200 2.5-10 has more internal lense elements than their 3-9. Believe it or not, you can actually get a sharper image in a scope with more internal lenses. Either way, they are both very good scopes for the money.

I believe Hunter is saying that if one was in focus (Monarch) and the other not (4200), clarity would be compromised in the Bushnell.
I myself can't see much, if any, difference between a 3-9x40 in either Monarch or 4200. Since I place a high value on low light performance, I will take a 4200 plex over the Nikon BDC every time, though. I would get the plex in the Nikon for that reason.

scope makers are into selling scopes, so they purposely make the scopes that they want to sell a ton of look very sharp under artificial light. most people dont take the time to take a scope outside of the store and look through it under natural light.

Go back to your store and ask if one of the sales guys will walk with you outside so that you can compare them in natural light.  Park you vehicle a good ways from the door and try to focus on you license plate under the same magnification.  Most quality retailers will let you do this.  I even had them do this for me at BPS on time with binos.  I would also try to compare the exact same magnifications because then you truely are comparing apples to apples if they have it availible.

Take the advice Bboy.  Go outside, with the same scope configurations as RD suggested, then do the comparison.  Until then, you could make the argument that a BSA looks good inside the store.
