Hi all, new here to the fourm, I was wondering what you can tell me about an older (1990's) Redfield Scope.  It's a 3x9 5 Star Compact (length 10.5").  Good, bad, pros, cons?

Any comments would be great!

All the best!

Greg

I like Redfield's for what they were: American made and very functionally designed.  The 5-Star is a good compact scope for it's price range.  I currently have a 3-9x40 Redfield made in the 1960's and recently sold a 1990's Redfield Illuminator 3-9x that I thought was a good scope.  These old scopes are functional but Leupold is not honoring the warrantee any longer.

Redfield's top of the line scope was the Ultimate Illuminator second was the Illuminator, than the 5 Star.The 5 star was like a Leupold VX-II made in the USA.

I could not see any difference between the Iluminator 3-9x40 and the VX-III 3.5-10x40 of that same vintage.  At least not under hunting conditions and at the range.  I did not ever test either with lines per mm lens charts.

Hi all, and thanks!!  The scope was made in the 90's.  One thing I did want to ask, what is a good price for one in excellent used condition?

Thanks again!

If you can get the box in good condition with some paper work you should fetch $200 for a 5 star. The Illuminators get anywhere from $200 and up.The Ultimate Illuminators are popular and get a good amount since they were sold new for $700 backin the early 90's.

IMHO Redfield scopes will price erode somewhat because of no warrantee service from Leupold.  I picked up a decent standard model 3-9x40 Redfield for $72.00 on Ebay recently.  The Illuminators are selling for $250 on up.  I bought mine new for $295. back when Redfield crashed and was bought by Weaver in the mid-1990's.
