I have a Redfield Hunter 3x9 sitting around and am trying to decide if its worthy of being mounted to a soon to arive 308 BLR eastern deer gun. What quality of optics are they? Am I asking to much of Redfields base model and maybe should opt for a Elite3200, Nikon Buckmaster? What power do you recomend?

I think the old Redfields were great scopes and I still have some Widefields and 1/2" .22 scopes.  I am not impressed with the new Redfields.  For deer rifles, I always go with a 3-9x40.  You will probably be closer to the 3X than 9X for most eastern hunting, but the variable gives you greater flexibility.  You never know, you may find yourself hunting on an open pipeline or even out west someday.  The 3200 you mentioned is a very good scope for under $200.00 or you may want to consider a Burris Fullfield II for the same money.  I would pick the Burris myself.

Thanks for your info. I was lucky to get a Leupold 3x9 compact in the deal for the BLR I just got. If I keep my 444 and don't use the Redfield I'll consider the Burris and the 3200 on it. I do need a better spotter scope (Burris). May want someting like 1.5x4 or so on it though.
