Hello all,
I just picked up a Redfield 3x9 Bear Cub scope. I have a really nice old sporterized 1903 Springfield in 30.06 I would like to put it on and I was wondering if anyone had any experience or knowledge with the 3x9 Redfield Bear Cubs. It's a 1" tube, in really nice shape. Thanks

Rick-
I know years ago, Redfield had a fixed 4X Bear Cub. I have never seen a 3-9x. I don't see why it wouldn't work well for you. For years Redfield made great optics.

Redfield acquired Kollmorgen in the 1950's, along with the Bear Cub line of scopes. Up until then, Redfield made open iron sights and scope mounting hardware. This is how they got started in rifle optics.
These old scopes compliment vintage rifles very well, but there are several things to consider. Many of these older Redfields had 26mm tubes (they started manufacturing 1" or 25.4mm tubes a few years later), so mount rings are difficult to come by. The other thing is that with age, the seals and internals can become fragile with age, so if you mount these on anything that kicks harder than a 30-06, I would not expect it to last as long as a fixed power scope of the same age/condition. |
