I`ve never owned a red dot scope before, so I`m going to expand my horizon a little, have some more fun and get one for my Ruger Frontier. I`ll switch back and forth the new red dot with my Nikon Monarch EER scout. Like the Monarch, the new red dot will be mounted in the forward scout position.

Not wishing to spend a bunch here for scope only to be used for part time plinking and pig hunting. Scopes such as the Aimpoint, Elcan, Doctor, EOTech, Trijicon and the Leupold Prismatics are out.

Any thoughts and/or experiences on any of the following?

Burris 1x35 Speed Dot and/or the Burris tactical, both w/3 MOA.
Nikon Monarch VSD 1x30.
Truglos with Red/Green reticle
Sightron 1x33.
Vortex has a new red dot tactical.

I prefer the tubed rather than the reflex type.

Looking for dependability, recoil durability for the 300 WSM, a good site picture etc. Anybody use a red dot? If so which ones? Other suggestions?

Own Aimpoint, EoTech, and the Burris tactical.

The problem with cheaper red dots (tube scopes like the Burris) when hog hunting is light scattering around in the tube in very low light.  If you spotlight or hunt in near darkeness, avoid the Burris tactical dot.

The Trijicon reflex scopes work well and will hold up well.  They don't do well in severe light contrasts (like spot-lighting) when the target is bright and the background is dark (or the other way around.)

Aimpoint wouldn't be a bad choice, nor would EoTech.  Aimpoint has a more well-defined reticle and, for relatively short shots, will suit your puposes.  EoTech has a better site picture but the reticle isn't as well defined; however, tehre is a smaller dot for "precision" and a larger circel for speed.

For your rifle and mount preference, I'd stick with aimpoint or eotech.

Comp3c with 2moa dot is the best bang for the buck of the aimpoint line

I like the reticle choices on the sightron and am probably going to send in an old one to upgrade to the new one

I just got a Compc3 for my 45/70 guide gun
I tried a Leupold scout scope on it and liked it, but wanted "less" for stalk hunting boar and deer

tried a set of ghost ring/peep sights and I just can't shoot them as well as I would like
I know the Aimpoint will  hold zero and I don't have to worry about the battery going out

Yeah, thats the same conclusion I've drawn as well. Swapped spit with the "Eothingy" for a while, but I'm back in the Aimpoint camp now.

Of the ones the OP listed the SIGHTRON is the best.  However, 33mm rings are not easy to come by and the ones suplied with same are crap.  Go w/something from AIMPONT.

Another vote for an Aimpoint. I had the old mark III years ago and upgraded to the CompM2 via the Aimpoint "migration program" a few years back. IMHO, the Comp Series is an outstanding product, multiple brightness adjustments, excellent battery life.
