My 10/22 came in. For plinking, target shooting and punching paper, will I be better off to go with a Red Dot or 4x? For a Ruger 10/22($250) is there a fair amount to spend on a scope without overkill on that level of rifle? Suggestions for red dot or scope around $100?
Thanks, |

Honestly we have a Aim Sports 3-9x40 Tactical Scope on a 10 22 and the glass is amazing for the price only gave 60 bucks for it.. Its compact with a good 3 - 3.5 in eye relief good fov target turrents and all.. Nice little scope kinda weighty for how small it is though

Inside 25yds, or if shooting in the dark is required=red dot.
Outside of 25yds= 4x scope. The big problem with red dots is that the reticles are usually too large (2-4MOA typically) for accurate work on tiny targets. Using a red dot on a squirrel at 50yds is rather difficult. The same shot with a 4x scope is relatively easy. |

Ok, I think I'm going to go with the 4x. I was thinking of not spending more than 1/3 to 1/2 the price of the rifle on a scope ($60-100) what are the favorites? Does parallax at 50 yds or 100 yds matter in a lower level of 4x scope?
Thanks. I'm sure this has been discussed a bunch, however, I'm new to all of this. |

In the $60-100 range, I'd go with a 4x Nikon prostaff rimfire classic.
If you stretch your budget a little to about $140, you can get either the Weaver 4x, the Weaver 2-7x shown above, or the Sightron S1 3-9x. Maximum parallax isn't directly affected by magnification. The ability to focus at close range with high power is affected on non-AO scopes, but other than that, if you keep your eye centered, parallax isn't a problem unless you're shooting benchrested. Adjustable objective scopes in your initial price range are hit and miss for quality. Basically you could buy the Simmons .22Mag 3-9x AO, or the newer Bushnell Banner model. |

If you're going to do plate shoots, go with a reflex sight. For hunting or shooting at more than 25 yards, go with a scope. I use a Nikon ProStaff 2X7 with a 75 yard parallex. I can also use it for plates on low power, just not quite as fast as a reflex sight. Paid $120 for it.

I'm debating between the 2.5-7 and the 3-9 AO Weaver for my airgun scope (I have a RWS Panther Pro.) I need to kill vermin below the bird feeder and along the treeline <50 yards out.
That said I have a Vortex Strikefire on my Ruger 10/22. Love it there. Fun range toy. Takes the hi cap mags too for raising hell upta camp.
I do all my "rare" high power critter shooting with a Marlin 917V & Vortex 6-24 Crossfire. Bottom line, for me - is that red dots aren't a lot of fun when it comes to hunting squirrels past spitting distance.

Either will work, but I chose the 2-7x Weaver, for the same shooting scenario you described.
It's a feral cat slayer on my CZ 452.
