Hi all,

I know there aren't many choices in this price range but I'm looking for a decent spotting scope. I'm not a professional shooter and I'm likely only ever going to shoot paper. I picked up a Barska  and was pretty disappointed (I know, buy once, cry once).

Any suggestions? I've had this recommended  which comes in at a nice price but I'm not sure how well it performs.

My issue with the Barska is that at its maximum power, the image quality was terrible.

Some info that might be needed:

Maximum shooting distance: Probably 100 - 300 yards MAX. In all likelihood, 100 yards will be where most of my shooting will be done.

Max price: $150

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Removed competitor links

Hi, Misanthropy...

Couple things:

First, please read the Forum Rules you agreed to when you registered your user account. Optics Talk is owned by SWFA, an optics retailer. As such, it's bad form to use the site our host provides for your free use to redirect others to their competitors.

Second, spotting scopes are expensive to manufacture, and you aren't going to find a decent spotting scope for $150.00. Everything you find at that price point will basically have similar image quality to the Barska you disliked.

Decent spotting scopes start at around $350 - $400 unless you buy used, and even those are just barely decent, IMO.

Understood, thanks Ted. I figured as much regarding quality but thought there may be something I didn't know. Apologies regarding posting competitors' links.

Cheap optics, especially high magnification cheap optics, show how bad glass can be. This is a pretty decent unit, and should work for the ranges you listed, but cost about double your price range...

I've got a cheapo Brunton Echo 12-36 X 50. It's ok for range usage at short to medium distances.

You may want to try the Celestron C-90. I have been satisfied with it for the price. Much better view than any of the smaller spotters at twice the price. with the correct adapter it can also be used as a camera lens for most SLR's
