Just sold a Leupold VX3 Long range with B&C reticle.  I bought the gun with the glass but the B&C reticle IMO is a hunting reticle and not for me.  I prefer mil dot or similar and run manual calculations.  Gun is a Savage FCP so specifically designed for long range fire and tested to 800M with no issues.

I do NOT need the newest hotness on the market and want to start shopping for a bargain sleeper.  I do not need a special name tag to feel special but I do want high quality glass on this rifle as I want to push the rifle to 1000M.  I already have DNZ 30mm rings mounted  but probably should have checked if a 50mm scope would fit.  I have no problem with 40mm if they will do the job.  I would prefer at least 16x, mil dot, possible illuminated but maybe not required. Side focus most likely, etc.

I am not married to the mil-dot but I think trying to standardize my glass with a similar reticle.  I have been happy with Leupold but always more interested in value than name.  I want to count the ants on a cow's ass at 1000M.

I am still in debate on first and second plane reticles.  Both have some advantages I guess...

There is not a scope made that would allow you to do that.  But if pure image quality is your goal, I would look a Zeiss Hensoldt, Premier, March.

If you are after good quality within a budget the SWFA SS line is a great place to start.  They have scopes from $300 to $1500 and all of them mechanically are very good.  Optically all are good and some are very good.

Don't get to obsessed with high magnification.  High mag and sub par glass is not a good mix.  You will always be better off with moderate mag when looking to budget scopes.

I was simply embellishing with my "ant on a cow's ass" statement.  I just mean I was very nice, clean glass comparable or preferably better than my VX3 long range.

I hear what you are saying with magnification.  I have a Barska 24x50 and I like to use it to compare to a quality 3-9 scope.  My 4.5x14 Leup was 10x the scope and I learned that the further down range you look, the more your glass quality stands out.  The 14x Leup was very nice at 600M but I was thinking I would like a little more mag for 1000M.  Maybe just an upgrade in glass will fix that?

Also, should I just plan to shop for a 50mm?  I just tested another 50mm I have and can fit it, no problem.  Just need to decide if I want to spend the extra money.  IIRC, the 50mm only really "shines" in low light conditions?

Oh, budget I want to cap at $1k.  Preferably closer to 500 but I am sure I will sell myself on more scope for this rifle...

For your budget, I would look at the Weaver Tactical 3-15x, Vortex Viper PST 4-16x and if you watch around you may be able to find a SWFA SS 5-20x for around $1000.  That would by far be the best scope you can get close to your budget.

Solid recommendations!  I am not real sure if I could fit that 60mm though.  My other 50mm measures 58mmOD at the bell with about 3/8" clearance to the barrel.

I also like the above thought about Weaver.  They used to have a string following and i have an older 6x32mm that is shockingly clean!  No way I would take 50 bucks for it...

So how does one compare these prospects?  Not like that is an ocular clarity rating is there?

http://opticsthoughts.com/index.php/rifle-scopes/4-rifle-scope-reviews   There are some reviews here that may assist you.  I consider the SS 5-20x50 a excellent choice and the Weaver a good choice considering your price range.  The next step up price wise would be Nightforce.  The Super Sniper would be my pick.  Good Luck .

So are you putting the Weaver tactical and the SS HD in the same class?  Even if you are not, how much of a difference are we talking here?  Like 10/10 people would easily see it or "everyone is different"?
