boy its been a hard summer on optics.
after hammering the batteries on the 458 socom the eotect finally let go. I hear the new ones are being made with the batteries horizontal, as AA's are not designed for this type of stress.
sheared the ao completely off the conquest, not pickup door proof. (ford won)
ao went out on the IOR 3x18 after 2k rounds, hopefully try the ffp this time around if I can talk Val into it.

Can you explain that failure a bit better. I'm buying a new 552 and it would be nice know if there are things I should be aware of.

it seems the eo's were orginally designed for lighter wt. nicads, and in the switch over to AA's nobody talked to the energy bunny about the heavier mass of the AA pounding out the bottoms of the batteries. In any case the 223 may not be a problem. I use the socom with a NFA lower so the stress may be more than a life time of 223.

I've had a few EOs on ARs with no problems, AAs or the smaller ( more expensive) batteries.

A 458 SOCOM generates some recoil forces, it makes sense that you'd see a failure there before anyone else with an AR (in .223) would.

Good luck with the 3-18FFP as that is the one that has had the most issues for IOR.

And, on the Conquest: had the turret been metal, would it still have sheered?  I hear people concerned about plastic turrets but have never actually seen or heard of a plastic turret failure due to the plasticness of the turret, you might be the first.

I'm sure the company has fixed the problem, probably using heavier  springs so the batteries can't float in the holder. The battery bottoms would take on an "accordian" folding making the seals break and then release the chemicals in the holder shorting it out, this is the second one, they just send a new one.

yea -- fingers crossed on the IOR

it was either the drop the gun/scope or the doughnets-- don't know if metal would have helped -- pretty bad whack.

Not all AA batteries are the same weight. The lithium tend to be a bit lighter than that alkaline and likely will fair a bit better if you are included to try them.
