Not sure what the back lens is technically called- but need help and opinions on who makes a good scope with a little larger back lens diameter (larger than the Elite 4200 4x16x40)

I guess I never really thought about it, but I think they are all going to be pretty close to the same size.  Out of curiousity, what are you hoping to gain?

I've always called it the ocular lens.  The Zeiss conquest seems to have a larger ocular than most other scopes that I have used.

Ranburr,

Simply put, I want a larger diameter surface viewing plane coupled with 3.5 - 4.0 eye relief.

HW,

I think you're concerned about the wrong end of the scope.  A larger diameter 'viewing plane' does not make the image larger.  It is the other end that determines the image size.

Neither end is going to determine the image size.  That is dependent on magnification.  The eye relief issue can be fixed with a Zeiss Conquest.

Look at it this way, imagine looking into a scope (ocular lens )with the diameter of a dime vs a quarter (or for comparison purposes a 1/2 dollar peice). This is the picture i am trying to paint.

Hogwild, I understand what you are looking for.  I just don't know that it exist.  I think most all are roughly the same size when discussing full size scopes.  You may want to look at 30mm euro scopes.  Their eyepieces might be slightly larger, but not much.

Brady (all)

What would be the second choice next to the Kahles. AND...what does Leica have to offer in this tread quest?

Leica doesn't make rifle scopes.  The old ones wer made by Leupold and that relationship has ended.  Brady, ok, it is 18% larger than what I assume is on their original 1" scopes.  But is it the largest?  Just how big is an 18% enlargement?  I have seen the CLs and it did not jump out at me as being huge.

Currently at this stage of the research, it appears as though the Zeiss Conquest and the Kahles CL are candidates. It would be interesting to know how the two oculars compare size wise between the two.

I'm sure the 18% is an increase from the previous kahles model. I miked the eye pieces and came up with a few measurements of the diameters.

Kahles CL - 42.50mm

Zeiss 4.5-14x44 - 41mm

Kahles non CL - 39mm

Keep in mind these were outside measurements of the ocular end. To get a true measurement you would have to measure the glass itself, but it will give you an idea. While I had the all three scopes out I compared them to see if I could notice any difference. I could notice a larger view through the CL. Kinda like having a big screen TV with the CL. You may not notice the difference unless you had another scope to compare it to.

Here are a few pictures to give you an idea.

The Kahles CL does present a huge image.  It's really "in your face" and seems like a lot more than 18% when comparing it to my Conquests, VX III's and Burris Signatures.

This is good technical information and research. The difference is obvious with just the pics that Brady compiled. The Conqest and Kahles CL really stand out. The Conqest offers the highest power magnification I think with the 4.5x14, with the CL offering a 4x12 as the highest. Im curious as to what other scopes are comparable to the Conquest and CL. Surely these are not the only two scopes that offer a minimum of 41mm plus ocular, one would think.

I have several Swarovski, Leupold, S & B, Zeiss VM/V and Conquest.  The conquest does have a noticably larger eyepiece than all the rest.  Although I do like the large eyepiece, I don't really see an advantage to it.  I understand about comparing the coins but what benefit does you see that the larger eyepiece has.

If this is your primary concern.  Have you considered one of the old Redfield Widefields?
