I'm about to start looking for a spotting scope. Mostly for range use(looking for paper hits/groups), some long range shooting too. I'm leaning towards the Vortex Razor HD line. Not sure of which magnification yet, and I think I'm leaning toward angled eyepiece. Anyway, is there another spotter to consider that is at the 1000.00 or under price point? About same boat with Binos too. (Have Vipers and would like something better)

I’d check on the Bird Forum, you’ll find tons of spotting scope info there.

I have a Bushnell Elite 80MM, which I believe is now called Forge. I have both fixed 30X and 20-60 variable angled eyepieces. The scope works great at the range, birding and ship watching.
I have had it side by side with a Razor HD straight eyepiece and I could see a difference in resolution with the Vortex. The Vortex is definitely better in that regard. I'm not sure on the price difference these days, but I would be happy with either.

on the bino subject. Meopta meostar hd are excellent. Pushing at the heels of the best binos out there for considerably less money.

I have a pair of 10x42 Meostar's and they are excellent for the price. Like supertool says, they are on the heels of the best and cost effective.

Well I may stick to the razor hd or maybe the viper hd. But should I go ahead and get the bigger magnification model or will a up to 45x be suffice for shooting?

My experience with spotting scopes for range use is that magnification is not as important as clarity. My Vortex Razor HD with a fixed 30X eyepiece lets me see exponentially more than my old Konus 80mm with the eyepiece cranked up to 60X. If you are considering the Razor HD and the Viper, I would strongly encourage you to wait the couple extra months to save the money for the Razor. I have a Viper PST scope that has lived on both a .458 SOCOM and a .17 HMR and it's nice glass....but there is a very noticeable difference to my eye when looking through the Razor HD spotting scope that I have. If there is any way that you can swing it, the Razor HD represents very good value for the money - and is definitely less expensive than any spotting scope I know of with comparable image quality.

The Vortex Razor HD is going to be hard to beat, especially considering Vortex's lifetime transferable warranty. There are some other good scopes out there including the Kowa Prominar and Pentax PF-80ED around that price point.

I have heard great things about the Pentax PF ED spotting scopes (they come in 60, 80, and 100mm). One advantage that may not be well known is that the Pentax PF can accept a standard 1.25 in. eyepiece. This opens up the whole world of astronomy eyepieces to experiment with. The Pentax XW eyepieces get great reviews on the astronomy sites as well as those from Televue. This was one reason I have a Celestron spotting scope that also accepts 1.25 eyepieces. I replaced the stock eyepiece with a fixed 9mm astro eyepiece from Meade that gave me a wider FOV and better clarity than the stock zoom eyepiece.
