I have been rethinking my thinking. I know this is dangerous. However if you scope Kahunas would rank these in the order of best scope to purchase it would be greatly appreciated. I have not put them in any order myself.

Burris 3-12x44 Signature Select Rifle Scope
Bushnell 2.5-10x40 Elite 4200 Rifle Scope
New Meopta 3-9x42 Artemis 3000 30mm

Pentax 2.5-10x50 Lightseeker Rifle Scope
Weaver 3-10x40 Grand Slam Rifle Scope
Zeiss 3-9x40 Conquest Rifle Scope

I am really eager to purchase but want to make the best decesion possible. I rarely have the oppotunity to purchase a new scope, so thank you for taking the time to help me!!

Steph,

I'm surprised to see where you rated the 4200 ........ especially compared to the Burris........ what did you base this on?

I'd rank the Zeiss at the top followed by the Burris.  The rest are so close together that it's hard to rank them.

Good luck to you!

Rank them according to what? optical quality? mechanical quality? overall quality? suitability for hard kickers? any other parameters?

What rifle is this going on?

I ranked mine on optical clarity, and performance...

Tip69,

What do you rate them as, and why?

Koshkin,

Thanks for taking the time to help. I would say Overall, Optical quality and low light performance. However I don't want to scarafice in other areas of quality that would affect reliabilty.

I am putting this on a T/C Encore 7MM 08.

I am not familiar with the Meopta Artemis line, so I can not comment on it.

Aside from that Conquest will have a slight edge in low light, followed by Elite 4200, then Burris/Pentax, then Grand Slam. Even then the differences are pretty minor.

Aside from that there is little to differentiate between these scopes.

Burris and Pentax are pretty much the same (Burris makes these scopes for Pentax).

I've been hearing some complaints about Conquest durability, but their glass is as good as ever.

I think Grand Slam quality has been getting a little worse lately, but I need to track it a little longer to be able to tell.  I heard a rumor somewhere that the production of Grand Slam scopes has been moved to China which I am trying confirm or disprove.

Either way, I would probably go with a Burris Signature Select 3-10x40 with Ballistic Plex or Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10x40 if you prefer the Firefly reticle.  Both scopes have good glass and a reputation for toughness.

Steph,

Unfortunately, I have not had the opportunity to compare all those scopes...... sure wish I had.  As far as I can remember, you are the first to rate the 4200 below either the Burris S.S. or any Weaver....although I suppose I haven't read all the posts....... and I was just wondering how you got to that.  I hope I didn't sound like a smart&%$, because I didn't intend that at all.  Just wanted to hear your experiences.

My best scope is a Weaver Grand Slam 3.5-10X50.  I just recently purchased a Burris FF II and I also have an older Redfield Golden 5 Star and a Leupold VX II all in 3-9X40.  Just the other day I looked thru the Zeiss 3-9X40 and the Bushnell 4200 3-9X40 and really liked them.  I hope to get a Zeiss soon!

I grew up in a "meat" hunterís house and a scope wasn't the most important piece of equipment!  If we saw horns, that was good enough.... no need for high quality optics since we weren't "hunting" for a trophy.  If we couldn't tell for sure if it had horns, we wouldn't shoot.  My first scope was a Weaver 4x wide view Dot. As I got older and got "introduced" to trophy hunting...scopes have taken on a whole new meaning!

I'm a marketing guru's wet dream!  At least I was before I found this site.  I bought the Grand Slam because of OL's review.....not sure what that means, weather that's marketing or real honest opinions.  I've learned a lot from this site and that's why I wanted to know more about your ratings.

I get optical clarity..... But how do you define "performance"?

Koshkin,

thanks for the feedback. I am very close or was extremely close to going with the Ziess. I have never looked through a Burris so I don't know them but hey they look great. Do you think the Ziess durability should be a show stopper?

To be honest, I have heard people complaining, but I do not think it is a showstopper in any way.  If you plan to be especially rough with this scope (like trying to pound a polar bear on its head, or something along those lines) I would stay away from it.

Otherwise, a lot of people have it and they are happy with it.

Zeiss, Elite, Burris, Weaver and Pentax.  If you had said the Meopta Meo Star I would have rated it as high as the Zeiss.

THANK YOU all for your help. I believe that I am going to go with the Ziess.

I am considering the Talley one piece mount built for the TC encore. Anyone have experience with these?

I have heard various complaints about plastic parts falling off.

I've also heard of a couple of people who put these on stuff that really kicks and having problems.  One guy put a Conquest onto a 45-70 Marlin and had issues, but I think he shoots some really ridiculous ammo in it: Garrett or something along those lines. I do not recall what the other guy put it on.

Anyhow, a determined yahoo can break anything given an opportunity.

ILya

Please would somebody by them, move them back to Texass, use steel for the tubes, dump the plastic, and price them so po' old werkin' stiffs can afford them.

This is just a rumor that I've heard.  The GS I just bought says made in Japan.  If I hear anything else I'll post it.

Of the 6 Weavers I have, only one is a Jap model and it has been very good to me.

The hardware store near me is selling off there gun stuff and has some "older" jap Weavers at discounted prices. Guess I'm gonna have to take the grocery money for this month and stock up for future projects.
