I recently purchased a Bushnell Elite 3200 Tactical 5-15x40 scope.  In the instructions it says that in order to range with this scope I need to place the zoom ring in the 12x position, which should be marked in red instead of gold(green in my case).  This is not the case for me, as my 12x position is not marked in red.  However, my 15x position IS marked in red.  The instructions online say the same thing.  Here's a link.

Any ideas?

I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but I searched here and on Google and couldn't find what I was looking for.

I'd call and ask them at Bushnell but if I had to guess I would say that it is most common for mil dot scopes to be set to mil dot range at the maximum power of the scope with most other manufacturers.  My guess is that it mils at 15x.   Bushnell sells some 6-24 scopes that mil at 12 x and this would appear to be an error.  At 100 yds one mil is 3.6 inches  so 10 mils is 36 inches and 5 mils is 18 inches.  Make an 18 inch circle on a 100 yd known distance target and compare it to 5 mils.

That was my guess as well, but I guess it would depend on the reticle, right?  A lot of scopes range at 10x or 12x no matter the max power.  I think the only way to know for sure is to calculate the mils for a given distance, like you said.
