I recently purchased your SWFA SS 12 X 42 MRAD scope. I'm waiting on a base to mount it to my rifle, a Remington 700 varmint in .308. I was wondering what kind of range of adjustment I can expect from the scope. For instance if I have it sighted in at 100 yds with a flat base and it can't be adjusted to be sighted in any closer, at what range would I be able to adjust the scope out to? I know a lot depends on the bullet weight and load I'm shooting so I'm just looking for a rough estimate. Thanks for your reply.

Strangely, it is not listed on the SWFA scope specs online - that is odd.

I have never used the 12X, but the 10X has enough to get you beyond 1,000 yards, so no worries on elevation adjustment being a problem for long range.

Keep in mind that, of the total elevation range of a scope, about half is wasted (once zeroed at 100 yards, you almost never dial the reticle up, just down - so all the up elevation is unused.)  That said, adding a 20MOA base gets back a significant amount of that elevation, and in no way adversely effects rifle or scope function.  For that reason, I almost always get 20MOA bases for my guns.  Flat bases are fine, but why not get a 20MOA base?  (The one reason one would not get a 20MOA base is if you are mounting a scope with close to or less than 40MOA total adjustment, reason being you might bottom out zeroing.)

Excellent point Rancid Coolaid, I hadn't thought of that. I just got a reply from the Sales Manager/Firearms Div. at SWFA, here's his reply.

You have 35 MILs of total elevation travel in that scope.

With a perfect mechanical zero, you will have 17.5 MILs up and the same down.

With Federal Premium .308 168 gr BTHP ammunition, it will take 11.6 MILs to get out to 1000 yards and 16.5 MILs to push out to 1200 yards.

This is under perfect conditions with no wind at sea level.

 Thank you,

 Dillon Hazelwood

Thanks for the quick reply Rancid Coolaid and SWFA.
