I use hold over with my spring guns on crow, woodchuck and some smaller birds. What ranges are you talking about? Also, what type of gun?
I am using a Vortex Crossfire http://swfa.com/Vortex-6-24x50-Crossfire-Rifle-Scope-P43585.aspx on a .22 Webley Patriot. It has target knobs, mil-dot and parallax adjusts down to ten yards. It is a big scope but not on the 9 lb. Webley. It is also under $100.
The mil-dot can be used as a holdover realizing that between the center of each dot is approximately 3.6" @ 100 yds. You could also use the 1/4" @ 100 yds adjustment.

Welcome to O.T.
Doug
