Hi there, I just picked up an FNAR 20" heavy barrel. I had a SWFA Super Sniper 3-9x42 scope with the SS rings (low I believe) on my old Remington 700. The rings are too low for the FNAR (front of scope hits the rail), so I clearly need a set of medium or more than likely high rings to switch them over.

My questions is, could I potentially use an AR-15 optics mount? I would really like to be able to switch this scope between my FNAR and my Larue 18" Stealth AR-15.

Just curious if my brain is clouded by wanting only one set of rings to swap between them or if this would work ok.

Thanks for the help!

I like the idea of using a La Rue quick release mount but there are several ways to get where you are going.  The ring height for the FNAR and AR-15 could be the same but call customer service and ask.  One quick detach system that you may not have considered that I really like is the GG & G

Thanks for the post.  It's interesting because half the people in a couple of different forums are saying "sounds like it would work", and the other half are saying "it won't work".

Why wouldn't this work?  They both have the same type of picatinny rail, is it that it would be ridiculously high on the FNAR or am I missing something?

The height of rings does vary greatly between different types of rifles and my experience is with the AR / M 16 guns but I have looked at the FNAR and while I do not think it needs rings that are as high as an AR I think you could make it work. Possibly the best way to make the same rings or ring base work would be to use a riser on the AR-15 which the FNAR would not need.
http://swfa.com/ARMS-36-Extended-Optical-Sight-Rail-P6081.aspx If you put the riser on the AR this model of GG&G would probably work for both perfectly but you should call the guys at customer service at SWFA and be sure -- they have charts and other info available to them to help determine correct fit.  Tell them what guns you have and what you want to do.  I think the FNAR is correct with medium to high rings where the AR requires ultra high rings -- same rings should work wiht the riser on the AR.

Ok, thanks again, I will just give them a call.  I may opt for the AR-15 mount, as even if it is a bit high for the FNAR, the FNAR comes with different size cheekpads and buttpads so I can raise or lower as necessary that way as well.

Like I said there are multiple ways of making it work adding a higher cheekpad is one of them, but most guys want the scope as close to the barrel as they can get it which is why I suggested using the riser on the AR so the same height rings could be used on both.  Eventually you will probably want one scope for each rifle or may want to set one up for CQB type use and the other for long range.  It is rather a pain to share one scope between two rifles as you spend more ammo setting your zero but with a top end quick release ring mount like the GG&G or La Rue you should find your correction to be fairly consistent between guns - just keep notes.

I have FNAR light barrel. I tried to use my DNZ 1 piece ring mount @ 1.375" (30mm) with my bushnell 4200 3-12x44 tactical, which worked OK with my flat top M16 at work. Well, this combo did not work for FNAR at all. It is about amlost an inch to high.

One scope for more than one gun is really a poor idea.
More than one optic per gun is a far better idea.

So why not us your SS scope where its most is needed and get yourself something else for the other gun. Start with a low price second hand untill you found what you want and have the money for it.
with current situation you get a solution poor for both guns and you will likely not remember wich one of the rifles that the scope was last sigthed in on.....

You woulds have to re-zero every time you switched the optic between rifles. But with a  very repeatable optic, and a quick-change mount that is also reliable, You could make a cheat-sheet. The knobs would only be zero'd for one of the rifles, but it would allow some flexibility until another optic was purchased.

I have "hot swapped" scopes on rifles for years... still do to some extent, but not like I used.  My wife and daughter accidentally threw away all my data book info on rifles/scopes and I just have not invested the time and ammo to recreate it.  If you create the data, you will know more about your rifles and scope than 99.9% of the shooting public and be able to transition from one to the other very rapidly... provided you have a repeatable scope.  I swapped on scope between several rifles for a number of years... mostly just because I could.
Now I'm scope poor and have scopes that I don't have rifles for... but I'm working on it...
