I have been shooting only open sights for the past 40 years or so. I ordered a new Remington Model 700 and plan to purchase a Savage 110BA later this year.  I am new to scopes.  As I shop around for scopes for these rifles I've noticed some scopes have First Focal Plane (FFP) and others don't. Can someone educate me on this feature?

If the reticle is in the FFP it means that as you adjust the zoom of the scope the reticle will get bigger and smaller. This is good for scopes with BDC and mildots. The reticle changes size to compensate for the zoom. So you never have to worry about which power of zoom you are on to utilize your BDC reticle or a mildot.

If the reticle was not in the FFP (SFP ) it would stay the same size in the scope but it would only be true to its angular measurement on a certain power. Most scopes will have the reticle be correct at Max power or a convenient setting.

Hope this helps.

Great explanation! I've also noticed some scopes have parallax adjustment and others don't. How important is this feature?.

The higher up you go in magnification of the scope and the farther you shoot the more important it becomes.
