A panther is a mountain Lion indigenous to North America, and a Jaguar I would guess is from the same family but I think originally came from central and South America.

So the difference is essentially no difference.

The other day I went to a wildlife sanctuary and they had a spotted (normal) jaguar and a black panther in an enclosure. The name tag simply read Jaguar. This intrigued me as I wrongly thought it should read jaguar and black panther. So I Googled. Turns out the black jaguar is not a separate species, simply a meleonistic  deviation. A white lion can also be called a white panther.

So the five big cats: Jaguar, leopard, tiger, snow leopard and lion are all of the genus Panthera. Note that the mountain lion is not a panther or part of this genus.

So all the big cats are panthers and not just the so-called black panther.

End of zoology lesson.Excellent

I think black panthers live in ghettos, but prowl around in downtown areas looking for prey.

I have seen a black jaguar - they used to have one at the Dallas World Aquarium.  Skip is right about the generic term "panther" being used here in the states to describe the mountain lion.  The jaguar was really, really interesting.  When it walked under the lights just right, you could see the distinctive jaguar spots, but just barely.  In addition to "cowtown," Fort Worth also has the nickname "Panther City."  It's an interesting story.  If you care to read about it, check out this link:

Something to do with their voices....their screams.  The mountain lion has a different voice apparatus.

One will rip your heart out and eat it for breakfast.  The other will also rip your heart out, but only after you buy it a few martinis and convince yourself that "this time it's different."
