I am looking at getting the deadnutz rings for my Tikka T3 lite stainless 300winmag. I also bought a Leupold 3-9X50mm VX-II scope. Do I need high rings or can I get by with the medium height rings. Also let me know what you guys think of the deadnutz mounts or should I be going with another brand of mounts. Thanks

Try PM'ing sholling , if memory servers me, he has a few rifles with Deadnutz mounts and could probably help you with your questions. It looks like a very cool mounting system BTW.

DedNutz mounts are an excellent choice for some scopes. Scopes with a lot of eye relief or a lot of room for fore and aft adjustment because the location of the rings is fixed with a DedNutz. The photo below is a great example of where it works. The Burris I'm using has a lot of eye relief and plenty of adjustment room.

The little Nikon Team Primos I chose for this Tikka didn't have enough room for adjustment so I went with Talley Lightweight mounts.

My rusty math calculations come up with .637 as the theoretical minimum ring height. In reality (see photo 1) you have a bit of a fudge factor. It looks like a sure thing that the high rings will work, and the mediums probably not.

Ring height (bottom of base to bottom of ring):

  • Low, .437" to .500", average .469"
  • Medium, .562" to .625", average .594"
  • High, .687" to .750", average .719"
