I see some bases advertised as 20 MOA. What purpose does this serve and at what ranges would it be appropriate? Most of my shooting is done around 200 yards. Would I be better off getting a 20 MOA or just the standard bases?

It adds 20 MOA of "ups" to your scope. Short answer.

Do you need one??

Not for 200 yard shooting probably.

I get them because it's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

Same price typically as a flat base. Your not out anything.

Thanks, I figured it wouldn't matter either way but wanted a second opinion.

I would say a 20MOA base could be good even though you never are shooting at longer than 200 yards all depending on you'r scope.

If you have a standard normal scope like Leupold 3-9 or Zeis 1,5-6 there is really no need for such a base.

But if you have a scope with Target/sniper turrets (where the turrets not are protected by a hat) there the turrets can be turned 3 turn the tilted base offer the oppertunity of always having the turrets on it's first turn.

That way it's easyer if the turrets gets turned by mistake or if you wanna check the setting when there is not enough light to see the graduation on the turrets.

Regards Technika

If you have 1" tubed scopes, they typically suffer from a lack of elevation.

That's why some folks, like Technika , prefer 30mm tubes, because they give them a lot more adjustments.

I too prefer 30mm tubes for the same reasons as the others, but 1" tubes with a 20 MOA puts you back in the game, and 1" tubed scopes are typically less expensive than 30, 34, and 35 and now 40mm tubed scopes. (IOR)

YMMV of course.

Well, I have a Savage 10fp-le2 and mounted up a Nikon Monarch 3-9 for now. I am awaiting to see if the super snipers come out in variables and if they do, I will probibly put one of them on to replace the Nikon. This scope was origionally for my .270 Winchester deer gun. Couldn't wait to shoot it though.
