Im just getting into rifle scopes and was wondering what the difference is between a 40mm and 50mm scope besides the fact that more light is transmitted. Is it better for a scope to sit lower on a gun with the 40 mm or does that matter? Thanks

yes its better for the scope to sit closer to the barrel but 5mm difference isnt a whole lot, not a deal killer. The larger objective allows you to use higher power in low light but not a lot higher ex 6x42 has 7mm exit eye pupil and 7x7=49 so a 50mm will allow just a little more than a 7mm exit eye pupil 7x8=56 so with a 56mm objective you could gain a whopping two power more and pay a lot more money and have a big clunky scope. So the ideal scope is a 6x42 or a variable that can get there like a 2.5-10x42 a 3-9x42 a 4-16x42 you just dial it down to 6x or lower at dark and poof someone just turned on your nightvision - well almost. I have a Bushnell 4200 that I like for hunting from a stand
And I have an aimpoint that I use for stalking and pushing deer
