With all the turmoil in Japan what effect is this going to have on the optics industry? When the affordable good glass comes from Japan, when and if it is gone we will have to either buy euro or Chinese!

There may be some disruption for a time but I think eventually we'll be right back to where we are unless the industry happens to be located right at ground zero of the damage or the power plant. Eventually the factories will be back up and running as soon as the initial disaster is delt with. Koskin or some of the other industry folks can probably share more on where the factories are located.

The quake will doubtless have some effects.  I think Japan is likely resilient and disaster is nothing new to their culture.  I think a wait and see is best.  As far as I know most Japanese companies are pretty well spread around, largely for the deal with disaster potential that is there.

Here are some links from another similar discussion elsewhere.

Not to beat a dead horse, but a lot of "good affordable optics" that people think are Japanese are in fact Chinese or at least comprised substantially of Chinese parts.  ALL of the Japanese major optics concerns are heavily invested in the Chinese optics industry.

It could become interesting getting Japanese parts for your cars too.  Of course you may not be able to get an oil change either outside of Texas with the whole middle east at war.

Several well-placed nukes, and we'll have the oil, and a huge glass parking lot to park our SUVs in.

I work for Toyota. were having issues getting parts over here from Japan but the higher ups expect only a short delay. the scope market should be fine in my estimation.
