Hello everyone, and thanks in advance. I'm new to long range shooting, and scopes in general. I have been an iron sites shooter my whole life. I bought a PTR91 FR for hunting and some long range target shooting. I have a friend who works for them, and he asked the folks there about a scope. They recommended thatI would need a scope 13 in. or under for the rifle. I'm looking to spend $600 or less for the scope. I was looking at the Nikon m-308 BDC 800, but it's 13.5". So in my looking a second time I stumbled across this forum. I have read several of the threads, and decided to post myself. I will be shooting max 300-400 yds hunting, and reaching out as far as I can at targets so a variable range is ideal. I guess I'm looking for the best bang for my buck (meaning all the doo hickeys I could possibly want/need) along with really clear glass. Please forgive my newbness, but I am looking to get something to learn all the aspects of long range shooting since my next step is going to be getting a good bolt action to start reaching further than I can with the 308 PTR.

I think you might be getting a lttle ahead of yourself with the wish list of wants....
Bottom line is:  Better glass trumps magnification!!!  Doohickeys, bells and wishes are often times more distracting than helpful.
I recommend not wasteing or using up most of your budget on  Doo-hickeys, bells and wishes....
Search for solid scope with best possible glass and turrets that track then worry about bells and whistles....
I'll take a good quality glass N turret Scope over one loaded with all the bells and whistles all day long!   The best glass will let you see things much better, crisper and defined in MUCH lower light conditions then any average glass high mag scope with every bell & whistle known to man!
This one simple fact is the BIGGEST stumbling block to those new to shooting optics.
With a $600 dollar budget you can consider Zies, Vortex, Leica, Sightron big SkyII/III and you shoul;d look hard at the SWFA SS line too!
The SS 3-15 X 42 is a FFP that for the price point is hard to beat!!!!  However it is 13.6" long...
Good luck and don't rush into a purchase or you'll almost certainly experience buyer's remorse....
