I have a Kimber Montana in 30 06,  I like the lite feel and looks of this rifle and am shoping for a light weight scope.  Is a Kahles 2X7X36 or a Leupold 2.5X8X36 too short in length for a 30 06, I hate extensions? Do you think I should move up to a 3X9X42 to keep the look and balance?

Thanks

Sam

I'm not fond of the extension rings either, but sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do. It's a long action so in order for the cheekwield adjustment ext rings are gonna be likely. Ofcourse you could opt for a one piece pic base.

I don`t like extension rings either!! I would make sure that you have enough scope tube length in whichever scopes you happen to be interested in.......In your case, I would prefer a 3x9x40 or 42 or 44 without extensions as opposed to a smaller length, more compact scope where you would need the extensions.......Besides, a 3x9 would look very good on your Montana anyway! And the weight difference would be negligible between a 3x9 vs. the choices you mentioned......I have a 3x9 Elite 4200 which is mounted on a 300 WSM Ruger Frontier Mk2 compact with the 16.5" barrel. It looks great and the scope does not overpower the rifles smaller dimension in length, which is only 35.5" in OAL.......It would be safe to say that in your case, a 3x9 would look very nice on your rifle....
